Edit: Whoa. I *definitely* did not expect to see THIS in the daily favorites. O__O Thank you so much, everyone!Part II!
Note: For poets, nonfiction, and short story writers, this tutorial is unfortunately not applicable..... The process of submission for those forms are vastly different!
Thanks again.

You're very welcome; I'm glad you found it helpful! I know exactly what you mean about finding helpful information.........it took me so long to figure out what the process for getting published was, and how to go about getting a literary agent. That sort of info just isn't advertised enough. If you get a chance, stop by the Writing/Publishing section at Barnes & Noble and look for books on the subject. There are quite a few that are published on it now. Also, Writer's Digest is a great magazine to subscribe to.
(I also recommend a website called Backspace.org . The forums there are full of members that are published authors, NYT bestselling writers, and several well-known agents as well. It's one of the most useful forums I've ever been in.

hey marie, i've been reading your book on your site marie-lu.com and i was wondering if you finished the glass sonata and havent posted it on there, or aren't finished with that book yet, so its not on the website.

I am indeed finished with The Glass Sonata, just haven't posted all of it on the website. I'm trying not to post the entire thing, since I'm still waiting to hear back from my literary agent about whether or not Random House or HarperCollins will accept the manuscript.

I think Donald Maas was one of the agents my query was rejected by.
According to this and your Getting Published I, I have been doing everything correctly and in the proper professional manner. I just have a box full of rejection letters. *Grin* Just need to follow up on the "Keep on truckin'" part of the process.
I'm working on a new novel, now, though, and have fallen somewhat out of love with my first *somewhat good* novel (which actually isn't my first novel, my first novel is this horrible thing I'm embarassed by that will never see the light of day again until I revamp it completely). I think the story I'm working on now is quite a bit better, less cliche'd (though being "cliche'd" is actually what the finished novel is supposed to be - it's a world based on cliches and all the characters know it!).
As for literary agents you've submitted to and been rejected by in the past... do they remember you if you've submitted once? I mean, for, if I wind up submitting a query for the novel I'm working on currently (when it is finished) to some of the same people I submitted my first novel query to? Would they remember me as "a writer we have rejected in the past?"
Thank you for the tutorials! They've very informative!

Thank you thank you thank youuuuuuuuuu! Been dying to find something even remotely similar to this (step by step but cuts straight to the point for each and isn't confusing to read), so I'm very happy to of run across this. It's always nice to find fellow writers on DA who were able to get published, because I think that makes others feel a lot more comfortable with the whole process.
I never knew about the word count either (the 300-500 pages), so that's a good thing to keep in mind. Now I don't feel so bad about the story becoming ungodly long later on. I can now go to town with my story without a worry . I'll be adding this to my favorites so I don't forget and can look back to remind myself.
As a last note: THANK YOU for listing those three Writers Conferences. Been trying to hunt them down without much luck and here you go listing one that is right in my state! Thanks!

Wow..again very helpful. I do have one question when you have time, do you know anything about those self publishers?? The ones you pay for that are suppose to help you get published and put your books on Amazon or somthing like that. Autherhouse is one of them. My question is, are they..really good to get into? Is that a way to go?. Again thank you. *smiles...

My word, you are the most awesome person ever! I'm writing a book, and everyone keeps saying you need an agent, and I had no idea how I could get one, but now when I'm finished, I'll try that out Although, what I'm writing is the story of 3 people, so it goes like Chapter 1 - person A, chapter 2 - person B, chapter 3 - person C - would they want just those first 3 chapters, or the first 3 chapters about each person?

mree In reply to werewolfhunter [2006-03-03 22:06:34 +0000 UTC]
Ironically, the book I'm currently working on has that exact structure. 3 protagonists. Anyway, they would still want just the first 3 chapters.

I absolutely ADORED this tutorial I did submit parts of my novel when I first finished the story I'm working on now. I got a rejection letter and cried over it for several days
But. . .that made me realize that I just have to polish my work more and try again. I've always had ifs about getting a literary agent, too. I'm not sure if it's essential or if I can get published without one, but it's probably harder without :-\ Thanks for this deviantion though
It has really helped to answer a few questions.

I'm fortunate that this DID make daily deviation! I've been working on a paper which is supposed to parallel a project. Every senior in my school is required to do a project of some sort to graduate and mine is to get my novel published. I've been having a hard time finding any information on this (and you were right to mention Tor in the first part, but they take many many months to get through all of their papers) so I'm glad to see all of this here.
It's been very helpful thus far, and the coloration holds my attention further. Were it simply text, I would've read it but jumped around a bit. Very professionally done!
