Description Edgewane
Issue 1: Eis Mazek
Written by M.R.Maloney

Page 1:
Panel 1: We see a man (Boogey) running through a forest, hopping over a nurselog with one hand on it as his legs swing over it, his other hand cradling something in the crook of his arm carefully.  His face is covered with a padded hood and noose that appears to have had eye-holes cut into it, as his eyes are wide in fear, his left green and his right blue.  The rest of the man seems to be covered in tattered bandages and rags.  In the far background we see torchlight coming from his pursuers.

    Narr.: "The Colony of Virginia"

    Narr.: "July 7th, 1588."

Narr. 3: "Six miles East of the Croatan Sound."

Panel 2: The man leaning over the bundle, pulling back part of it so that we see it is a sleeping girl with brown hair.

    Mob (off-panel): "There he is!"

Panel 3: The man running off into an extremely dense part of the forest with a bunch of red predatory eyes glowing and facing the direction he had just run from, not one of them looking at him.  Another man is in the panel (wearing attire such as seen here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Bap… ) at the right side chasing after him, desperation on his face.  There are several tall stones with odd grooves in them, mostly covered in moss, dotted about the treeline where he is entering.

Guide (off-panel): "Give up your pursuit John Gibbes!"

Page 2:
Panel 1: The man spun around, vehemence on his face.  The native guide pointing at the trees, the red predatory eyes still visible behind him.  The guide is topless and muscular, but massively tattooed ( loose reference upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia… ) and has a stern glare at the forest.  The guide is holding a torch.

John Gibbes: "But we've hounded him all day and are so close!"

John Gibbes 2: "Don't tell me he's entered some sacred line-"

    Guide: "No!"

    Guide 2: "Not sacred!"

Panel 2: There is a glowing green light coming from all the grooves on the stones and a green glow coming from behind the darkness of the the trees.  The guide is running away, the man staring at the green light.  The red predatory eyes are starting to disappear two by two, some still there but not as many.

Guide: "He leads the child unto death, into Popogusso!"

John Gibbes (whispering): "What manner of...

Panel 3: The light increases and the man collapses to the ground.  The red predatory eyes are almost all gone now.  There is a lone shadowy figure visible in the midst of the glow with white coming from its eyes in scratchy circles and its mouth a sinister smile full of sharp points standing out against the white behind them.

    John Gibbes (whispering): "witchcraft?""

Figure (scratchy white word balloon filled with black with scratchy white text inside it): "¿∆Θ§ÇŧƩΩ?"

Panel 4: The same panel, but the light, the figure and the red predatory eyes are all completely gone.

    John Gibbes: "Yes..."

    John Gibbes 2: "I...  I understand now."

Page 3:
Panel 1: Full page, show a depiction of the town of Edgewane, a city nestled between the East Lake and South Lake in Dare County, North Carolina.  The entire city appears to be laid out in a heptagram with the center being Dorrell University, and the architecture of most of the homes is New England Colonial.  At the points of the star are statues looking toward the center of town, but each road is about a mile long, and other roads branch off from them.  There is a graveyard on the North end of town past the statue there, a church at the bottom right point beyond the statue, a hedge maze at the bottom left point, and a house at the other four points as well, including the upper right with the Gibbes House, where the protagonists now live.  In the top left corner we can see the docks where the East Lake and South Lake are, and a vineyard on the far right side of the panel.  We can see a small moving van next to the Gibbes House even from the distance that shows the majority of the town.

Narr.: "Edgewane, Dare County, North Carolina"

    Narr. 2: "Wednesday, September 1st, 1987"

Edmund: "Bleh, this sucks, Edgeweird sucks." (stress 'weird' and italicize it)

Edmund 2: "Why did we have to leave Greenville?"

Page 4:
Panel 1: Wide panel.  Edmund helping his father move a mattress toward the house, a few movers beyond them moving a large old cathode 'tube-tv' set and assorted boxes into the house's large double doors.  We can see a flight of stairs, long but narrow through the door.  Edmund is looking at the ground as he helps, one of his shoe-laces untied, wearing a pair of overalls and a long-sleeve shirt.  He appears to be about eight here.  Stacy, three years old, is holding onto one of the back straps of his overalls, sucking her thumb, looking behind her at the moving van, and wearing a simple dress with sunflowers on it.  We can see a couple trees and bushes around the house, and small window-box flowers growing.  Edmund and Mr. Porter all have gray eyes and short messy brown hair, and Stacy has gray eyes and blonde hair tied up up in pigtails.  Mr. Porter appears to be in his mid thirties and is wearing a sweater, slacks and dress shoes.

    Edmund: "I miss my friends."

    Mr. Porter: "I know Edmund..."

Mr. Porter 2: "But Isabelle grew up here in Edgewane, and the college here is willing to pay me as much as my last job before your mother and I..."

Mr. Porter 3: "It's just going to be a better life for us."

Panel 2: Show the inside of the Gibbes House, in the main lobby, with the stairway door open at the back.  The two are heading up the stairs and Stacey is running over to Isabelle in the kitchen who is unpacking a box.  Isabelle seems to be of French and Swedish descent primarily with black hair and brown eyes, is wearing a red and gray blouse and skirt combination with a large black belt, and appears to be in her late twenties.

Mr. Porter: "You trust me, right champ?"

    Edmund: "Yeah, I guess."

Panel 3: Edmund sitting on the front steps as Mr. Porter waves with his right hand (on the left of the panel) at the leaving moving van, seen from an angle that focuses on the family but allows the van to be seen in the foreground leaving.  Isabelle has her right arm around Mr. Porter while his left is around her, with Stacy chasing a squirrel on the lawn.  The sun is setting in the background.

Narr. (Mr. Porter): "You'll see Edgewane has a lot to offer."

Panel 4: Edmund opening up a box.  We see a family portrait, though the reflection of the last of the sunset hides his part of his mother.  We can see she is blonde, but not her face.

Page 5:
Panel 1: Tall panel, 2/3rd height, about 1/3rd width of page.  Edmund in his room, everything set up, with a bunch of boxes in the middle and some clothes on the floor.  As it is 1987, there are a lot of teenage mutant ninja turtle, transformers, he-man, a rubix cube and other assorted toys of the mid 80's, but nothing made after 1986. Edmund is sitting on his bed fiddling with the rubix cube, wearing a pair of shorts and a simple shirt.  The clock next to him glows 8:02 with a dot for pm visible.  In the background we see Isabelle, standing in the doorway, leaning against it.

    Isabelle: "Bedtime, sport."

    Edmund: "No it's not."

    Edmund 2: "It's only 8 o'clock."

Edmund 3: "Dad always lets me stay up till 8:30."

Panel 2: 1/3 height, 2/3 width.  Isabelle putting away some of Edmund's clothes for him.

Isabelle: "All right, but are you all set then?"

Isabelle 2: "Teeth brushed?  Showered?  Used the bathroom?  Hands scrubbed?"

    Edmund (off-panel): "Yep."

Panel 3: Isabelle kissing Edmund on the top of his head while he keeps fussing with the rubix cube, shrugging.

Isabelle: "Okay, just be in bed in half an hour then."

Isabelle 2: "I'll never understand how kids your age can play with that thing."

Isabelle 3: "All I really played with were Trolls and Barbie."

    Edmund: "I dunno."

    Edmund 2: "I like puzzles."

Panel 4: Isabelle shutting the door behind her, smiling at Edmund while he keeps fussing with the rubix cube.

Isabelle: "Well, you're a bright boy."

    Isabelle 2: "Good night Ed."

    Edmund: " 'Night Isabelle."

Panel 5: The outside of the house, the new moon in the sky, stars shining, a soft breeze pushing a few of the trees and bushes visibly.

Page 6:
Panel 1: Edmund in his bed, startled awake, eyes wide.  The clock reads 12:05 without the dot on the pm.

    SFX: "CRASH!"

Panel 2: Edmund at his bedroom door, looking down the hall to the right at Stacy's room where we see a faint nightlight glowing and a figure standing next to the bed.  On the left of the panel we see the door to Mr. Porter and Isabelle's bedroom is open a crack as well.  Edmund is barefoot here on out.

Panel 3: Edmund tugging on his dad's arm but there is no response.

    Edmund (hissing lightly): "Dad!"

Edmund (same) 2: "There's someone in Stacy's room!"

Panel 4: Edmund looking at Mr. Porter and Isabelle's faces, seeing a kind of white sand over their faces that is visible even in the darkness.

    SFX: "Thump! Thump! Thump!"

Panel 5: Edmund in the hallway, Boogey holding Stacy over his shoulder as he descends the stairs, looking exactly as he did over 399 years ago.

Panel 5: Boogey's eyes zoomed in, afraid, removing all doubt that it might be someone else similarly dressed.

Page 7:
Panel 1: Boogey at the bottom of the stairs, heading around their base to get to the stairs leading to the basement.  Edmund is hurrying down the stairs after them, a baseball bat leaning against the door at the bottom of the stairs that leads outside (the same door that the family came through before).  Near Boogey we see the kitchen and a bowl of fruit.

     Edmund: "Stacy!"

Edmund 2: "You let my sister go!"

Panel 2: Boogey spun around, eyes full of rage, grabbing an apple from the bowl.

     Edmund: "You..."

     Edmund 2: "You sick freak!"

Panel 3: Boogey throwing the apple at Edmund and the child smashing it with the baseball bat.

Panel 4: Boogey's darting into the basement.

Panel 5: Edmund at the door to the basement, heading down the stairs after Boogey, who already has the stairway closet door open and is partway inside it.  There is a faint green glow coming from the closet.

Boogey (small, whispering, hard to read): "Eis Mazek."

Page 8:
Panel 1: Edmund standing at the stairway closet, gawking, staring inside at only boxes and nothing else, and an old wood floor.

Panel 2: Edmund in the closet, trying to push a few boxes out of the way to try to find Boogey, but stubbing his toe against the trap door.

    Edmund: "Nowhere to hide you-"

    Edmund 2: "OW!"

Panel 3: Edmund staring down at the trap door which appears almost entirely hidden except for the small bit that his toe hit.

Panel 4: Edmund opening the trap door.  On the underside we see the heptagon carved into the wood.

Panel 5: Edmund staring down at an empty cube of space.  One each of the five sides we can see various markings, runes, and depictions of maze pathways.  In the center we can make out 'Eis Mazek', though the font looks ancient.

    Edmund: "What the...?"

Panel 6: Edmund peering down at the markings.

    Edmund: "Ei...?"

Page 9:
Panel 1: Edmund looking confused but we see the markings, runes, etc all glowing green, as well as the heptagon on the bottom of the trap door.

    Edmund: "Eis Mazek?"

Edmund 2: "What the hell does that mean and-"

Panel 2: Glow coming from the cube of space and the heptagon.

Panel 3: The trap door falling shut on its own with Edmund clearly not there anymore to hold it up, and no glow at all coming from anything.

Panel 4: The closet door open and looking down at the trap door and barely seeing a trace of where it opened before, just like when Edmund stubbed his toe on it.

Page 10:
Panel 1: Full page.  Here we see Edmund standing atop a stone dais with the heptagon inscribed into it lightly glowing green and cutting through an image of Earth back when the it had the super-continent Pangaea still.  Beyond him are stone steps leading down to a flat stone surface with cracks and moss and such, and a circle with multiple archways each leading into the endless labyrinth of Mazek.  There are seven in total surrounding the dais, but we can only see four here.  We can see Boogey carrying Stacy in the distance of one of them, but rounding a corner and clearly too far for Edmund to notice given the shock of transition.  On one part of the curved wall, however, we see a teenager (Rhymer) in a black Victorian dress with a gold and black raven skull ring ( like this: goo.gl/07sXr3 ) that has an emerald set into it on her left hand, who surprisingly enough is stretching and yawning while standing perpendicular to the curved wall.  Additionally, on the curved wall itself there are a great many inset alcoves with various items on small pedestals.  Two clearly visible are a pair of iron and leather goggles with an emerald on the side of each lense frame, and a pair of copper bracers with an emerald on each, a tungsten manacle collar with an emerald in the center front, and a few other pedestrals not fully visible to show their items yet.

    Edmund: "Where is Stacy?"

Rhymer (italicized): "Hark, a new face for the maze
One perhaps still in a daze?"

Page 11:
Panel 1: Edmund staring at Rhymer, a small smirk on her lips as though she was used to that sort of reaction.

Rhymer (italicized): "Are you of the peaceful lost
Or for another have you crossed?"

Panel 2: Edmund looking around in confusion.

Edmund: "My...  My sister was taken."

    Edmund 2: "Here, somehow..."

Rhymer (off-panel, italicized): "Question not the entrance magic
Time we need to prevent the tragic"

Panel 3: Edmund's eyes wide, about to head off down one of the archways.  Rhymer is running along the wall toward him.

Edmund: "Either help me find Stacy or leave me alone."

Edmund 2: "She might be annoying at times, but she's my annoying sister!"

Rhymer (italicized): "Guide I shall be but halt I say
There is a burden all must pay!"

Panel 4: Edmund trying to jump and yank Rhymer off the wall and failing, the teen crossing her arms.

Edmund: "Well, get down here so I can pay the toll or whatever!"

Edmund 2: "I've got twenty bucks still from my birthday money."

    Edmund 3: "That's enough, right?"

Rhymer (italicized): "The cost is not fiscal, but of choice
Such for me affects which words I voice"

Page 12:
Panel 1: Edmund pinching his forehead, looking at Rhymer as she rubs the ring on her finger.

Rhymer (italicized): "I roam on stone ceiling and wall
But ever rhyme my voice must call"

Edmund: "So you have to talk like that, but in exchange you're able to do that freaky walk thing."

Panel 2: Rhymer nodding and smiling, Edmund scritching the back of his head.

Rhymer (italicized): "Yes, correct, that is true
                            Understand, now you do"

    Edmund: "Great..."

Edmund 2: "So what's the choice and the cost?"

Panel 3: Rhymer gesturing to a pedestal with a lead sword with an emerald in its hilt, and beyond it around the curve is a bottle filled with mercury with an emerald in the stopper.

Rhymer (italicized): "The cost will soon make itself known
The choice which object you will own"

    Edmund (off-panel): "Got it, riddles."

Panel 4: Edmund walking along the curved wall, heading past the goggles.

    Edmund: "Okay, I like puzzles."

Edmund 2: "I'm good at puzzles."

Edmund 3: "So, I want Stacy back, but I need to get her away from that freak, but before I can do that I have to find out where he is if I ever want to see-"

Panel 5: Edmund turned back, picking up the goggles.

    Edmund: "To see her again."

    Edmund 2: "Sight, vision, wisdom."

Page 13:
Panel 1: Edmund putting the goggles on and turning.

Panel 2: Edmund seeing through the goggles an afterimage of Boogey hurrying off down the path beyond one of the archways.

Panel 3: Edmund raising a fist in victory.

Panel 4: Edmund trying to chase after Boogey's afterimage and crashing into the curved wall next to the arch.

Rhymer (italicized): "Wisdom is knowledge applied
                       Perhaps glimpses should be tried

Page 14:
Panel 1: Wide panel, 1/3 height.  Edmund pushing the goggles back up to his forehead, Rhymer walking along the wall ahead of him.

Edmund: "Easy enough cost to pay I'd say."

Edmund 2: "Now, he took a right here..."

Panel 2: An above view, Boogey hurrying off down the various pathways of Mazek with Stacy over his shoulder, kicking and screaming though we don't see any word balloon.  Further back we see Edmund and Rhymer heading along the path having taken the right with Edmund lowering the goggles down again.

Page 15:
Panel 1: We see a shadowy pair of clawed hands waving at the sides of a crystal ball with Boogey carrying Stacy in it.  All around in front of him are red predatory eyes softly glowing.

Figure (scratchy white word balloon filled with black with scratchy white text inside it): "Another child on its way..."

Panel 2: The figure waving his hands over the crystal ball, and we can see Edmund and Rhymer in it now.

Figure (scratchy white word balloon filled with black with scratchy white text inside it): "But yet again he fails to grab one unnoticed..."

Panel 3: The figure sitting back in a onyx throne with the crystal ball on a slab of onyx next to it, and another slab on the opposite side which has a crown on it.  There are even more red predatory eyes softly glowing visible now.

Figure (scratchy white word balloon filled with black with scratchy white text inside it): "I'd almost think it willful resistance if he had the intelligence."

Panel 4: The figure putting the crown on with one hand, showing off his mouth in the exact same sinister smile full of sharp points standing out against the white behind them that was seen in the second page.  His other hand is gesturing forward toward the reader.  All the red predatory eyes softly glowing now have a red mouth that joins them.

Figure (scratchy white word balloon filled with black with scratchy white text inside it): "But, perhaps it is time to put more than the one pawn on the board..."

Page 16: Show the undermaze filled with primitive gargoyles in more detail, their red predatory eyes softly glowing in the darkness, but with two starting to climb along the wall where part of the maze is open air connecting both sides of the maze.  On the top side of the maze we see Edmund and Rhymer walking.

Narr. (Figure, (scratchy white box filled with black with scratchy white text inside it): "This will be brief but entertaining..."

Narr. (same) 2: "After all, none of the others managed to survive more than a few scant hours save that blasted Rhymer, but this one chose a new piece."

Narr. (same) 3: "Let's just see what secrets he holds..."
