Kiwirail orders 250 Ventia/Kiwirail-branded Vectron (VF Class) locomotives from Munich in Germany for New Zealand's national rail network. These locos will have the subclass variants, VFA for multi-system electric variants, VFD for "DualMode" hybrid variants with diesel generators and VFE for AC only electric variants. Most of them will operate in the South Island with more capacity for freight. These state-of-the-art machines will be set to a narrow gauge setting of 3 ft 6 in (1,067mm, 3'6") and operate on routes electrified at 25,000 volts (25kV 50Hz AC), reducing the country's carbon footprint making the environment green as the NZ First, the Green party, and the Labour party would expect.
