My dad gave half of my genetic code and his lineage

My mom gave half of her code and her lineage

My dad shared his logical side

My mom shared her stories and my dad's

My dad shared his love of old cars

and to that dream his parents had said "no!"

you must be a doctor they screamed...

My mom shared her love of nurturing

my mom wanted more than to be stuck at home with me.

She wanted to be free to see the world?

and her dream her parents said "NO"

you must get married and have offspring!

I sigh now when I think back to fourth grade. When I said

"I want to be an artist"

Which to their dismay drowned in a roar of "No

You will starve first and die away"

I smile now

I am an artist

I am a product of both you see

My parents don't see

When I adopt children

I will encourage them

to seek as many possibilities

you can be a doctor and a writer

you can be a cook and painter

Life can be more than one flavor of ice cream

If you just believe

My parents each gave half

So I can be whole?

But we need not forget

all of my ancestry in my genetic code

a colorful array of talents

My dad gave half

So here I am...
