You know, I've been playing the Pokemon games faithfully since Yellow was released, and I have NEVER randomly encountered a shiny.
Talk about horrendously bad luck.

the only shiny I've ever seen is a shiny geodude in firered, I still have it and now it's a lvl. 100 golem :3
