Description
Dear Mom & DadTrooper ran from his foxhole on this cold winter's night
His squad was all ready and buttoned down tight.
Sgt. Timberwolf checked on his men but try as he might
It was certainly clear that they were in for a fight.
So I'm writing you these lines dear mom and dear dad.
If I don't make it, I don't want you to be sad.
I died for my country, my home and my flag.
Trooper listen to the private words and his tail started to wag.
Get over here Private, Trooper shouted out the order.
Then the enemy started in with a blast from a mortar.
The enemy blasted the area with cannon and mortar
The poor infantry squad they were looking to slaughter.
Trooper saw the poor private trapped out by the tree line
But getting to him was going to take time.
Trooper looked at the private he was scared as could be.
He was huddled close to the ground, and next to a tree
The private shook like a leaf it was clear he was scared
The kid was in trouble, but Trooper showed that he cared
The private held on to that rifle and never let go
Admits all the bombing it started to snow
Listen up Private I'm coming to get you
You'll never make it Sarge you can't get through
You will run for this foxhole before they blow you to bits
Some words were exchanged we have to admit
For the sake of the children most words were unfit.
Covering Fire!!! The soldiers showered the enemy with hot lead.
Run for it now Private did you hear what I said?
The private fired at the enemy from an uncovered position
Get over here private before you need a physician
Don't worry about me Sarge I won't let you down
Then from out of the night came that fateful round.
The private fell on to his back looking up at the sky.
Trooper ran over to him as he started to cry.
Trooper held on to the private it was all he could do
The kids eyes were still open but he never came to
When the battle was over and it was clear that they won
Trooper stared at the grave marker and recalled how that night had begun
It started with a letter to his mom and his dad
Now I'm going to finish it and it really makes me quit sad.
Trooper wrote to the parents and family he never met
Your son was very special to us and we'll never forget.
Trooper wiped away his tears and looked to his squad
He's in a better place he in the house of your god.
Come on men we have to get back on patrol
They left the solider there buried deep in that hole.
Saint Michael stood there with the private at his side
The private pleaded with the archangel with honor and pride
Let me stay with my squad and look after them until the end
And when it's their time I'll help them transcend.
St. Michael stared at the solider long and hard
Stay with them solider you'll be their armed guard.
The private snapped to attention and gave a salute as a sign of respect
Trooper and his squad would never suspect
They lose a good man on that cold winter night
But the private always stood watch and was always out of site
