Description
Edit, Important: Several people have voiced concerns over the similarities between this piece and Shmeeden's "A Lesson:" [link]To avoid any further accusations of theft (not on Shmeeden's part: she was simply concerned, and justly), let me just say that I would never, never knowingly steal another's idea and pass it off as my own. Speaking from personal experience, I know how awful it is when one's work is plagiarized, and it isn't in my character to condone or perpetuate such an act. Although I don't know most of you personally and the best estimations you have of my character come from my online interactions, I do hope you know those online interactions are genuine, and that I am not the sort of person to steal another's idea. I can understand being inspired by another artist, but outright theft is wrong: it is as simple as that.
That being said, my best estimation for what happened here is that this is a mixture of pure coincidence and subconscious influence. I saw Shmeeden's piece several months ago when she posted it, favorited it because it was wonderful, and left it at that. I can honestly say that her work wasn't on my mind when I did this. Subconsciously, it may have been, but I didn't even note the similarities and didn't even recall her strip until it was recently pointed out.
That being said, because posted "A Lesson" months before this, I credit her with the original idea. I apologize for any concern this may have sparked, but let me assure you, as vehemently as I can, that I did not, in any way, shape, or form, knowingly set out to copy and steal her work and pass it off as my own. As I mentioned, her comic had completely escaped my mind when I drew this one, and had I had the foresight to check if this idea had already been executed here on DA, I would not have posted this. The absolute last thing I want is for anyone to doubt my integrity, or to suspect or accuse me of plagiarism. It feels incredibly strange to even have to address concerns that I've stolen artwork. It's just so not me.
Again, the idea behind this strip was first created by in this comic (which, let's be honest, folks, is eons better than the one above, and absolutely darling): [link]
HEADS UP, IT'S A BIG OL' FILE! (download for best view!) Also, it reads left to right to avoid any confusion.
I worked like a dawg on this here thang. I no longer have Photoshop, so I had to make due with piecing this together in Preview on my Mac. Which took forever and gave me a headache and gas.
ANYway, I've been thinking about Erik and Christine (gee, that's new) and how exactly their music lessons would go down. We don't really hear too much about the specifics because Christine is always disappearing behind her mirror or pulling Erik's mask off and making him cry for seven hours for any real teaching to go on.
Now, I'm sorry, but as brilliant and talented as Erik is, he would be THE most frustrating vocal instructor EVER because any little mistake would set him off. Patience isn't exactly his favorite. Plus, he just likes to yell and rant throughout the day, anyway, so top a tired soprano with the world's biggest perfectionist, and you get this.
As for Christine, she'd have to get fed up with Erik's constant, "Stop!" "No!" "Vibrato, I say, vibrato!" and pop eventually. I like to picture Christine much feistier than she is portrayed in the books, mostly because imagining her tiny little self yelling at crazy tall Erik with her hands on her hips is hilarious.
Also, regarding this comic, NO, I do not mean to insinuate that they abandoned propriety right there on the floor. They kissed, fell, and kissed some more. The end. PG, PEOPLE. WE'RE KEEPING IT PG.
Except for Erik's potty mouth. Geez, Erik, way to up the rating.
Erik's potty mouth and The Phantom of the Opera is Β© Gaston Leroux.

Never mind Erik's potty mouth; I rather thought Christine's comment in the last panel was a double-entendre...
But you're right, he would be the worst, most perfectionist and least patient teacher in the world! This was brilliant. I about lost it at "I'm a damnable ray of sunshine!" Kudos and cheers!

I really liked this strip, and by that I mean I liked it when Eden Bachelder did it originally. I'm a little embarrassed for you that you felt no creativity on your own, and felt you had to lift it, almost verbatim (except for the last line) from the work of a more charming creator.
[link]
it can also be found online at deviant art here:
[link]
The similarities are so strong that it's hard to believe it wasn't lifted. I'm interested to be proven wrong, though...

I have contacted and have assured her, as I do you, that there was absolutely nothing underhanded going on here at all. I saw her wonderful work when she posted it, added it to my favorites because it was a really great piece of art, and left it at that. I would never, never knowingly plagiarize or steal anyone's artwork and pass it off as my own, particularly since I know from personal experience how awful it is to have your work stolen. The fact that I am being accused of theft is beyond surreal. It is so not in my character to do so, and I find it reprehensible that some people have the nerve to steal artwork and disrespect the artist in such a way.
I know the only inkling you have of my character comes from my activity here on DA, but I want you to know that those interactions are genuine. The absolute last thing I want is for anyone to doubt my integrity and to believe that I would disrespect an artist in such an underhanded way.
I can honestly say that her comic was not on my mind when I did this one, at least not consciously. As I mention in the artist's comments above, this is a mix of pure coincidence and subconscious influence. The similarities between this piece and hers completely escaped my mind until they were just pointed out, and I can say that with a clear conscience.
Again, I've contacted to express to her many of the same sentiments I've expressed to you. As mentioned in the artist's comments above, I've given her credit for the original idea and I have also left it to her discretion whether or not this piece should be removed. I told her that the absolute last thing I wanted her to believe was that I disrespected her talent and her lovely work because she is, as you mentioned, the "more charming creator." And I meant it. I don't want her, or anyone here, to feel uncomfortable, or to believe I've committed such a falsehood. I am guilty of not having the foresight to check and see if this idea had been executed before, but I am NOT guilty, and nor will I ever be, of blatantly stealing someone's work. That is wrong, that is disrespectful, and I do not condone it in the slightest.
I must admit that it hurt to be accused of having no creativity of my own, and of having such a poor moral compass that I would "lift" someone else's creativity for my own gratification, particularly when I know that I've done no such thing. But I want you to know that I understand where you're coming from, and I appreciate your effort to insure that credit is given where credit is due. Thank you for alerting me to the similarities of the two strips so early on so I can address your concerns. And I hope I've proven you wrong. I may be an airhead for not checking for the prior execution of this comic idea ahead of time, but I am not a thief.

I promise you that there was absolutely nothing underhanded going on here at all. I want to assure you that I would never, never, knowingly steal your idea, composition, or credit for the idea. It is not in my character to do so, and I do not condone it when others do so. I've never once even contemplated art theft because I know from personal experience how devastating it is when someone takes your work or idea and passes it off as his or her own.
I had seen your piece when you posted it, and it was wonderful. Yet I can honestly say that it wasn't even on my mind when I did this, and the only thing I can think of is that I was either subconsciously influenced by it or it was sheer coincidence. I think it was probably a bit of both, although, as I mentioned, I wasn't thinking of your work at all when I was working on this.
I am aware of how difficult it may be to believe my assurances when we've never met and the only estimation you have of my character is from my interaction with this site. But I do hope you know that I'm not the sort of person to steal--it just isn't in me. I promise you that I would never knowingly pilfer another's idea and pass it off as my own, and that was not my intention when I posted this. It was a complete accident that things worked out the way they did.
I am going to post a link to your comic in the description, as, since you've pointed it out, I can't help but think that influenced this one somehow by sticking in the back of my memory, and I will credit you with the original idea. If this piece makes you uncomfortable in any way, I will remove it immediately. Please let me know if that's what you want--the absolute last thing I want to do is make you or anyone else doubtful of my integrity.
I apologize for any stress this may have caused you, and thank you so much for pointing the similarities out. The only thing I can do is continue to assure you that I would not now, nor will I ever, plagiarize in any way, shape or form. This was an accident, as pure and as simple as that, albeit an unfortunate one. And again, if you feel that this needs to be removed, I will remove it. I don't want to make you uncomfortable, and I certainly don't want you to believe that I'm at all disrespectful towards your lovely work.

Much appreciated!!
You definitely don't need to take it down. I know this kind of thing can happen. I really do enjoy your take on it, and think this is witty and lovely, but it was juuuust too close for comfort for me to let it go unremarked. I can see that a ton of time and work went into it, and I can't imagine that you'd have consciously done so with any type of plagiarism in mind.
So, I'm cool if you're cool! And the inclusion of the link would be very much appreciated.

Thank you so much for your understanding! You're wonderful! I literally did breathe a sigh of relief!
I completely understand your concern, and I would have done the same thing in your position. (I HAVE done the same thing because I HAVE been in your position.) I've revised the artist's comments to include a link to your piece, and I've credited you with the idea behind this--because, really, I'll bet you anything that I saw your work and it stuck in the back of my memory somehow, and then along came this.
Again, I can't thank you enough for your understanding. You had every right to be concerned, and you have every right to ask me to remove this, if it should bother you in the future. I'll gladly do so.
