Description
While I was being such a diligent student and totally NOT wasting my time over spring break, I found this photograph of Canadian model Rick Genest: [link]Rick's intricate skeletal tattoos have gained him international attention. I'm not a tattoo person, but you've got to admit, from an artistic standpoint, those are unbelievable.
And of course, who was the first person I thought of when I saw him?
I have problems.
I wanted this to look like an old medical photograph. Sort of Joseph Merrick-esque, although I doubt Erik ever sat still long enough for someone to take his picture. "Say cheese" wouldn't exactly work in this situation. In any case, you know my love of all things Victorian, and there is nothing more eerie than old medical photographs. Or Victorian post-mortem photography. Yeesh. I've seen too many creepy things in my day, to the point where I'm almost desensitized, but those photos just give me the heebie jeebies every single time.
For me, this was about portraying Erik at his most vulnerable and casting the things that mark him as "grotesque" in harsh light. That probably explains the lack of hair. For some reason, bald just seemed to work here.
Poor guy.
The Phantom of the Opera is © Gaston Leroux.

He looks like most of the super models today
All joking aside, this is great. He really does look like a walking skeleton.

I love this!! You're one of the few artists on dA who's willing to draw Erik like Leroux meant him. Bravo!

Despite being of a person too grotesque and skeletal to even be considered human by many, there's something about this piece that inspires pity and love as opposed to disgust and fear. It's probably my own bias as a fan of Phantom of the Opera (a phan?) but it's certainly something to be thoughtful about.

...Whoa. Crazy tatoos are crazy. But you're right, they're amazing nonetheless.
And, uh, so is this drawing. You've drawn us a little skeleton.
I MEAN, you've drawn Erik!
Beautiful definition with the bones and everything. Such a nice understanding of anatomy, man.

Wow, that's on the one hand very scary but on the other hand kind of beautiful too. (As you said ...I have problems......but I agree, me too and I *lol*ed X3).
From the artistic point, I love it and...I don't know,Erik looks very human here despite he looks objectivly very dead. You said old post-mortem photography is eerie, I'm very curious but also happy that I didn't see such kind of photography till know, but I can imagine it to some point.
I think this picture made me think about the story again, because over the years I dealed with many aspects of the it, but this picture reminds me again what it's all about. Erik is ugly, that's the problem in the story and his life and the reason why the book ended as it did.
Thank you for bring that back to my mind and I always hope that you waist your time with things like this.
(Why did I hear pretty Gerik scream like a girl when I looked the first time at this picture....0.0 )

Your Erik will always be more of an Erik to me than Gerard Butler, or anybody on stage, or anyone who's played him ever, really, any way he's been portrayed. Yours is probably one of the most faithful adaptations I've seen. He's ugly, and diseased, and yet desperately sad, and that's how you see him, not as a sex symbol with a bad sunburn, and I love that about everything you do.

Skinny, skinny Erik! He looks so...deathly ill, but you pulled it off in such an artistic way that it's just beautiful. I know what you men about the old medical photos--those always freak me out too.

Yup. I'd still hit that.
Kidding aside, lovely image, Muirin. I have always been a fan of a less-haired Erik, even if my own version of him has a big poofy mane.

Thank you so much! You know, I've always thought there's a beauty in everything, particularly when it comes to the human body. Something that others consider grotesque can be just as lovely as something they consider beautiful, just in a different way.

That's so true. I think it has to do with seeing something in a different light than most people would and trying to find the meaning of a piece.

Well my first reaction was, "GaH! He's so BEAUTIFUL!"... I'm not sure if... that would be considered a normal reaction... Ok, but I literally just finished watching the movie, and every time I watch it all I can think is how ridiculously good-looking Gerard Butler is, which kind of entirely defeats the point. This is how Erik is supposed to look. Wonderfully drawn

Ha, no worries! When I first saw that movie, I went, "Who is THAT?" Because he was one fine slice of Phantom pie, that's for sure. Which does defeat the point, but hey, it's good for the female demographic.
And then 300 came along, and now I can never look at Gerard Butler the same way again. Because I keep waiting for Erik to go, "This is Sparta!" and kick Carlotta into a bottomless pit.
Thank you so much!

I sat back after looking at this drawing and tried to figure out exactly what I thought. And the first thing that came to mind was that Erik is a man who desperately needs himself a sandwich. Several sandwiches. And possibly a hug.
Really though, this is a beautiful piece. I love the lines going across Erik's skull and how delicate (actually, vunerable) he looks here--stunning job!

I lol'd so hard at this, I thought it only fair to comment.
I'm having trouble, however, imagining Erik eating a sandwich. He'd totally have to cut it into little pieces and eat it with a fork. XD

Oh haha, I'm glad it made you laugh! Gotta admit I can't take full credit for the notion of hugs and sandwiches as cures for grumpy, slightly murderous, underfed madmen. Jonathan Crane (the dastardly villain who converted me to Batman fandom) possesses quite a depraved group of fangirls who have unified against him with force-feeding and rib-crushing.
Being that Erik still has a special place in my heart and is SO DAMN SKINNY, I like to imagine he'd be more receptive to that sort of thing. Maybe. If the eerily insistent smile didn't turn him off to the whole thing first.
He totally would eat it with a fork and knife though. Imagine he'd be incredibly neat about the whole thing, and possibly unsure what to think of it as far as food articles go...
but given time and persistence, he's sure to fill out.
