How to beat the hold that the man laying and dying by her side still had over her heart, despite everything.

“But, for what is worth, I…” He hesitates, perhaps looking for the right words, or perhaps trying to understand what it was that he wanted to express in the first place. It’s with no small amount of effort that Karin manages to turn towards him and look at his profile.

There was blood staining his cheeks and mimicking the form of tears, and there were scratches under his chin and on his nose, but Karin still found him beautiful. With his eyes closed and his face that now looked so peaceful, Karin could hardly believe that her eyes were lucky enough to see him with his guard down again.

A part of her had said goodbye to him a long, long time ago. But the other—the other had stubbornly continued to hold on tightly. And it had been that other part that which had brought her here, that which had made her risk her life and take part in the war, that which had ultimately caused her to end up with a gaping hole in her chest and a one-way ticket to the afterlife.

And Karin cannot help but hate herself a little, because as she laid there, life abandoning her, she still couldn’t feel disappointed in the slightest. At the contrary, she felt… she felt…

Alive. More alive than she has felt in the past few months, and she knows then that it all was worth it just to get to see Sasuke again.

This Sasuke. The Sasuke she fell in love with. The Sasuke who—

“But for what is worth, I… I miss you, now.” Sasuke murmurs finally, his eyes opening again. And Karin’s lips part and she can only stare at him, mouth agape, her heart beating up so rapidly inside her chest that she was sure that she’d die in less than the blink of an eye, because her blood was rushing through her like a wave eager to crash against the sand.

“I miss you now, Karin”
