Description location: Osaka, Japan

reason: One month abroad to study Japanese. Kyoto has to be one of my favorite places in Japan, so rich in culture and history.
The skylight near my home-stay. I was located in the "suburb" area of Osaka, a 20 min metro ride into downtown. You would think all suburbs are alike no matter the country, the idea behind it, to get away from the bustle of the city where giants come in the forms of cement structure with thousands of eyes.
But Japan is different, "suburb" doesn't mean sprawling homes with huge back yards and high fences that mark your territory. In Japan, space is a luxury. Instead of building out, they build up, dotting the suburb skyline with high-rises with futons airing out on their balconies, flapping in the wind.
It made me wonder if the US would be the same if we were also strapped for space, minus to futons. We take larges houses with double baths and wide green painted lawns for granted. What would you do if you could drive across your country in less than a day instead of 3? How do you make space where there is none to be found?

inspiration:
"Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the drug store, but that's just peanuts to space."
- Douglas Adams
