HISTORY

The plans of criminal organizations across the world tend to be quite big and can have very deep roots, but few can truly say that they were a potential threat to the very existence of life in general; Team Galactic is one of those few organizations and its dark history is one more than worth examining and understanding. The leader of Team Galactic, Cyrus, was born in Sunyshore City and was a bright but otherwise asocial individual as a child who preferred machines over the accompaniment of people or Pokémon. Despite the fact that he was a good student, his parents were still always disappointed in him and rarely showed much affection for him, in turn leading him to brood and feel more pain and misery than anything else. Over time, these feelings ate away at Cyrus, until one day, he came to a moment of realization; in his mind, Cyrus believed that the pain he was feeling was not due to his own fault but due to the existence of emotion itself. Cyrus wished to destroy not just all emotions and feelings but the essence of spirit itself, the very thing that gives meaning to the existence of life…but to do something that grand and extreme was nearly impossible for any single human, let alone the human race, to ever achieve. It was in his darkest hours that Cyrus began researching the legends of the Sinnoh region and came across the legends of Dialga and Palkia, the beings responsible for the existence of time and space. Cyrus believed that if he used the powers of the Lake Guardians, the beings responsible for the existence of emotions, knowledge and willpower, he could forcefully summon the deities and use their powers to destroy the world around him, creating a new world free of spirit where he would rule as God. With this maniacal plan in his mind, Cyrus set out to find his destiny and created Team Galactic in the process.

Team Galactic was only a front for Cyrus’ real ambitions; in order to rally support for his cause, he worked under a banner of science, telling that his dream was to create a new type of energy that could support the world indefinitely and destroy the corruption and greed that was making the world incomplete. He gathered a top suite of Commanders to do his work and began using his criminal enterprise to steal power from various sources in an attempt to modify it or otherwise build a new form of natural power that was sustainable to the extreme. This led him to send his Commanders to attack various parts of the Sinnoh region seven years ago (including the Valley Windworks) and, with funds acquired there and across the region, he built a pair of bases for Team Galactic, one in Eterna City to oversee minor operations and another in Veilstone City to act as their main base. While his organization was out ‘looking’ for energy, Cyrus spent his time researching the Lake Guardians and learning how to use their powers to summon the ancient deities of space and time. When local and international police forces, alongside incidents involving a young trainer, began to rattle the cage of his plans, Cyrus took immediate action and shifted his plans into overdrive. Daring for officials to challenge him and his goals, Cyrus and his four Commanders attack and destroy the homes of the Lake Guardians, capturing them and transporting them back to his main base in Veilstone City, where he used their powers to create a mystical item known as the Red Chain. With the combined power of Uxie, Mesprit and Azelf, this item was capable of using the essence of sprit to tear a hole through the fabric of space-time and in turn summon one of the legendary deities from its respective dimension. Although a young trainer managed to break through most of the barriers surrounding Cyrus and infiltrated the Galactic base to rescue the legendary Pokémon, by the time the young trainer had gotten to Cyrus, he had already finished constructing the Red Chain and had used his advanced technology to clone the item, in turn giving him the power to summon both Palkia and Dialga with little trouble. With that done, he and his troops set off for Spear Pillar, where he intended to finally realize his destiny.

At the peak of Mt. Coronet, Cyrus and the last of his army gathered at Spear Pillar and, using the power of the two Red Chains, Cyrus successfully summoned the two legendary deities to destroy the world as it was and create a new one without the spirit he despised so much. Cyrus had effectively won and would have been successful in his plans, but he made a critical mistake in that he had, as most of the region and world had, forgotten about a third deity in legend that shared a similarly important role: Giratina, the ruler of the Distortion World and the living embodiment of dark matter. Furious at Cyrus for trying to use Palkia and Dialga to destroy the world, Giratina viciously attacked Cyrus and dragged him into the Distortion World; the young trainer that had been fighting against Cyrus, alongside the Champion Cynthia and the Lake Guardians, entered the strange world and defeated Cyrus for the last time, ending his plans completely. Cyrus could not understand what Giratina was and why it was the only natural life form in the Distortion World. He couldn’t understand why the beast hated him and why the world did not simply vanish upon the creature’s defeat…but above all else, he could not understand why spirit was so important to everyone he met. Vowing to learn the secrets of Giratina and the Distortion World as well as eventually using the beast’s powers to destroy both worlds and make his dreams reality, Cyrus wandered off into the Distortion World, never to return to the world he had been born in.

After Cyrus vanished, one of his Commanders, Saturn, took over as the organization’s leader and decided to pursue the premise the organization had been built under, namely the locating and harnessing of new forms of renewable energy. Although Saturn was not shocked to learn of his boss’ real intentions, he has done his part to make the organization as legal as possible (never believing that extremism was the solution) and is currently progressing quite well towards his goals on several projects. Commanders Mars and Jupiter left the organization and, under the ‘leadership’ of Commander Charon, they staged an attack on Stark Mountain shortly after Cyrus’ disappearance; realizing that there was a chance for a considerable promotion to be made, Charon had come up with the brilliant idea of holding the entire region hostage by threatening to force Stark Mountain to erupt. In order to do so, however, he would need the power of a local Heatran to trigger the eruption, but the same trainer that foiled Cyrus’ plans did so for Charon, defeating both Mars and Jupiter soundly and forcing the old man to retreat to the deepest part of the volcano. Afterwards, the two women left the organization for good, while Charon was arrested and put in jail where he resides to this day. It is unknown what happened to Mars and Jupiter, but considering that they were only following Charon to look for their true leader, Cyrus, it is unlikely that they or any other part of Team Galactic will be causing any further chaos until and if Cyrus returns from the Distortion World.

CURRENT/FORMER LEADERS

Name: Galactic Boss Cyrus
Pokémon: Honchkrow, Gyarados, Houndoom, Crobat, Weavile
Bio: Treated poorly as a child in his hometown of Sunyshore City and with no real friends at his side (aside from his grandfather on the outskirts of the Sinnoh region), Cyrus has been and probably always will be a loner seeking retribution for all of the evil that has been done to him. Although Cyrus did his best to make his parents proud as a child, he was never successful and delved into such a negative life that he sought to destroy all emotion and spirit just to ease the pain that filled his heart. In doing so, Cyrus became nihilistic and filled with an intense God-complex, wishing only to destroy the world around him so as to rebuild it and command it under his total and absolute control. Though he put on a good show commanding the legions of members under Team Galactic to fight for him and the pursuit of renewable energy, Cyrus never was a man of kindness, only hate and patience. His cold personality made it difficult for him to form any direct emotional connection to his subjects and even his close Commanders, but the unending loyalty they showed for him even today nonetheless grants him a respectable reputation despite the fact that he almost completely destroyed the world. While his calculative ploys and masterful battling skills should have been enough to achieve his goals, Cyrus was unfortunately blind to the innocent threats that opposed his views and was unable to deal with imminent threat when Giratina, a legendary beast even he did not know of, chose to end his plans forcefully. It is unknown if Cyrus will ever take another step in the world that he was born in, but considering how persistent he has proven to be in the past, it is quite likely that the human race may never get to see this man again.

Name: Commander Mars
Pokémon: Golbat, Bronzong, Purugly
Bio: Little is known about Commander Mars’ past, but it is more than apparent from her time in Team Galactic that she is not one worth crossing if possible. While Mars may be considered to be the lowest of Cyrus’ Commanders, Mars was fiercely loyal to her boss and was always willing to do as he wished of her even if it went against her better judgment. Because she looked up to Cyrus with great respect and adoration and possibly even had feelings for him, Mars was regularly made fun of by others, in particular Commander Jupiter, whom she does not like whatsoever. When Charon tried to make Stark Mountain erupt, Mars realized that she was a fool for following him (not that she ever respected him as a Commander to begin with) as his ideals were nothing like the ones that Cyrus had; in disgust, she left Charon to be arrested by the local police and has not been seen since. No one is quite sure where Mars is today, but seeing as she apparently left to find Cyrus, it is possible that she may one day find exactly where he is, even if it means becoming trapped in the Distortion World herself.

Name: Commander Jupiter
Pokémon: Golbat, Bronzong, Skuntank
Bio: Little is known about Commander Jupiter's past, but it is more than apparent from her time in Team Galactic that she is not one worth crossing if possible. Jupiter may have had the same position ranking as all of the other Commanders, but she always believed that she was the best and was destined to rule the Team someday if Cyrus’ plans did not turn out alright. This sort of dissension made her highly unpopular with Mars and thus sparked a mutual distrust for one another on a regular basis, but she was nonetheless a loyal servant of Cyrus and would follow his orders no matter what they may have been. After being reduced to traveling with Charon for too long, Jupiter got sick of him and his twisted ideals and promptly left the group and has not been seen since. It is unknown what Jupiter has decided to do with herself since the breakup of Team Galactic, but it is unlikely that she will be causing any future trouble without the involvement of Cyrus.

Name: Commander Saturn
Pokémon: Golbat, Bronzor, Toxicroak
Bio: Little is known about Commander Saturn's past, but it is more than apparent from his time in Team Galactic that he is not one worth crossing if possible. Although he might not be any better at battling than his fellow Commanders, Saturn was effectively second-in-command and rarely went out into the field much, preferring to let Mars and Jupiter to do all of the dirty work for him. The two women did not appreciate Saturn for his attitude, but they generally followed his orders regardless out of sheer respect for their boss, with the obvious exception of Charon, who really did not care for any of the three for any reason. Saturn is considered to be relatively cold just like his boss, but unlike Cyrus, Saturn has always been a man of logic above anything else and it did not take him too long to break away from the others after Cyrus vanished into the Distortion World, taking full control of Team Galactic in the process and ensuring that its reputation would not be all bad by the end of his time. The fact that Saturn has taken full control of the organization means that there may likely be some conflict with him and the other Commanders in the future, but unless Cyrus ever decides to return, renewable energy will be the only thing Team Galactic will be concerned about for the rest of its existence.

Name: Commander Charon
Pokémon: None
Bio: While the history of the other Commanders of Team Galactic may be a relative mystery, Charon’s background is actually well known and paints a bit of a sad tale for this old man. As a child, Charon and his family lived in the Old Chateau that is mostly abandoned and supposedly haunted today. He lived a relatively normal childhood by any account, minus the fact that he managed to discover the Pokémon Rotom during his childhood and made the first-ever major emotional connection to the strange organism. An abnormal accident with a close family member forced Charon to leave and then ultimately abandon his home many years ago and it is unknown what happened to him, but years down the line, he would join Team Galactic with the hopes of someday controlling it himself. Charon was generally an upbeat person and cared more about his own genius than his boss’, which made squabbles between him and the other Commanders quite frequent. After Cyrus left the group, Charon took it upon himself to lead Team Galactic to victory at Stark Mountain, but his plan to hold the region hostage did not go so well when Heatran failed to appear to him. With that failure, Charon was captured by local and international police force and currently resides in a maximum security prison, though recent activities and connections have not left him friendless, as he was recently allowed to reunite with the Rotom he had so loved during his childhood. The fact that he has been forced to bear the sentences of all his fellow Commanders has not made Charon’s life easy, but knowing someone of his genius caliber, it is unlikely that this is the last we will ever hear from him.

CURRENT ACTIVITY/INFLUENCE ON SOCIETY

Team Galactic, now under the command of Saturn, has taken a radical turn from its previous endeavors and is actually doing quite well in keeping its head out of trouble; instead of pursing the ideals and destruction Cyrus wanted, Saturn has gotten into the renewable energy business and is currently working on combination systems that utilize different forms of alternate energy together in order to increase efficiency. So far, a lot of their plans have gone nowhere, but combinations involving small-scale nuclear reactions and simpler forms such as solar energy are working surprisingly well and may end up being the latest thing in renewable energy once the bugs are all worked out. Team Galactic has made a major impact on society in that it has shown that ideals are not always enough to justify actions and, perhaps more importantly, that transparency is a key component to any operation. Cyrus hid his goals from the world in order to make sure that they were not attacked, but this also led to dissension within the group and partially explains why there was never any major attempt made to reform the group after his loss. The ramifications that Team Galactic’s actions have had extend far beyond the scope of this report, but if there is one thing that can be said, it’s that Cyrus proved to all people and all other criminal organizations that research is key to any operation. Cyrus did everything right and almost succeeded in his plan, but he failed to understand that Giratina had a part to play in everything, a flaw that ultimately cost him everything. Members of future organizations, such as Team Plasma, would learn from this incident and make sure that every single detail was planned out simply for the sake of efficiency and eliminating costly surprises.

To me, the moment Cyrus stepped on to the regional stage set off a new ripple of chaos that spread out all around the known regions. I mean, a good long while after Cyrus got trapped in the Distortion World, N stepped in and publicly showed Unova how horrifying Legendary Pokemon can be. 2 years after that, Ghetsis used Kyurem to nearly cause a new ice age and actively threatened to kill people. Meanwhile Lysandre nearly used the power of Yveltal to effectively nuke Kalos, which not even Zygarde managed to pick up on. It all culminates in either Lusamine feeding the world to the Ultra Beasts, or Necrozma trying to end the world as we know it.

tl;dr We have Cyrus to thank/blame for escalation of evil in the Pokemon World

I think that Cyrus conciously chose to ignore Giratina's existence. After all, he had access to the same sources that Cynthia had. And rescuing Cyrus from Distortion World was not fun - Cyrus went completely mad from the solitude. I handed him to the International Police so that Cyrus could get some psychological help.

Some people do question a world of free will, because of the flaws in man and in the world. Yet...if the world didn't have spirit, as Cyrus desired, it may not of had the flaws as one may say, but...it would be a world without soul, without any hopes or dreams or feeling or soul. It would be a world without love.

Indeed. To destroy free will is to destroy one's own purpose, for one cannot hope to achieve such a goal without a purpose to influence their own free will.

I'd say out of all the villainous teams from the 6 main regions, Team Galactic is probably the best of the worst. Cryus came dangerously close to achieving his goal, and his ultimate goal is unlike any of the other organizations.... the destruction of the planet and remaking it without spirit under Cyrus' command with the rulers of time and space itself. Jesus, that is way more insidious than Team Rocket, Magma, and Aqua. Team Plasma is a unique case to me and Team Flare I don't have much knowledge of (though I do find it interesting that one of the elite four in Kalos is a member of team flare). But I'd have to place Team Galactic at the top of the pyramid of crime organizations from the main regions

I will give you that Cyrus' ambitions and goals were definitely the greatest of them all, but I personally find him to be a flawed character as he completely ignored Giratina's existence; granted, it's existence had not been scientifically validated until that moment, but even Cynthia had an idea about the legendary creature's existence.

You mentioned before that most of the world had forgotten about Giratina's existence, I guess its not surprising that Cyrus overlooked that little detail. Considering he came dangerously close to achieving his goal, I'd say that is a good thing.

Can you just imagine what would happen if he succeeded in using Dialga and Palkia to destroy the world and remake it without spirit and/or emotion?
