This got me thinking...
Culturally speaking, Equestria itself is a lot like America, a land settled by many different peoples, eventually all merging into a common culture. For Equestria, this certainly is true.
But what about the old world? What kind of cultures did it consist of?
From the episode 'Hearth's warming eve' we can decipher that the different races of ponies did indeed have very distinct cultures, each one mirroring what we have here in Europe.
The unicorns are obviously of western European likeness, and their culture mirrors greatly that of countries like Britain, France and Spain.
The Pegasi have a more Greco-roman cultural likeness, both architectural, and militarily.
And finally, the earth ponies have a more 'Germano-Slavic' common culture.
But where would that put the Sphinx'?
Perhaps something along the lines of pre-islamic Egypt. Whose mythology depict the Sphinx as a benevolent guardian.
