Description
Here's a fun color practice! I really enjoyed painting this. The photograph I looked at is here: dadoux.deviantart.com/art/Mont⦠by dadouX .
Is that colorful enough for the "color " challenge?
PS. Also a rock and water study! More bang for your doodle.

Your doodles are jawdropping!
Good colours, good water/rock study, impressive detail.
Only comment would be about the saturation of the green reflection, but someone's already said it.

Yeah.... everyone picked up on that green, it's hard to miss... but I'm surprised I haven't gotten grief for the hot pink rocks yet!
Thank you! I enjoyed painting this one!

I really admire the way you've painted water ripples, and the reflection which is a bit more saturated than the original pic.
yup, very interesting work on the reflection!
then the shore in the background, with desaturated colours perhaps( guess i need to wear glasses now
) well the distance effect is very good though i can't define the effect you created and used there.
Of course what mesmerized me was the almost elliptic shape of the rocks combined with it's own reflexion, it's a good pic from ~dadouX ; and your choice for warmer colour on rockies pleased to my eyes.
Sorry for my bad english ^^' dear artist

No, that's perfect... knowing what works helps me with the next ones, and I am doing a series of landscapes... I loved that photo too - it was perfectly shot...
I did use cooler, less saturated tones in the background, although still quite a lot of it is warm squiggles but mostly the effect I used was simply to not use as much detail in the background as in the closer shore. This effect as you say, helps give the impression of atmosphere and distance, because some of the details get lost on the way to your eye.
I will try to accomplish similar results in my upcoming work Thank you so much for taking the time to tell me what you really enjoy!

oow ... "a series of landscapes", it sound pretty good
Bet you're gonna make me travel through your artworks,
as you do with this one!
Oh! i also preferred your point of view rather that the one of ~dadouX
it's like if you were sitting at his left when you painted it x)
you've opened a few space on the left part of your work from the foreground to the shore in the background and i appreciated it too
i've seen great paintings based on landscape pictures, but most of them are traditional or digital copies of a 'picture pattern', which is a good exercise to rehearse the use of colours, light and shadows etc, but remain a copy :/
Thanks for sharing & explaining how you treated some parts of your work again it brings me back to my history of art lessons in some way.
and as you know i like understanding how you (and other artists) paint or draw, so
and i never doubt you're gonna bring the house down again in your upcoming works

Wow, you really outdid yourself, Mynti. This is really beautiful.
I noticed your comment about using 100% opacity and I hope you don't mind me asking -- do you have custom brushes you use? The reflections don't look hard edged at all, so I'm assuming you use something other than the standard hard-round.

Awww! Thanks!
Of course I don't mind you asking I use the standard "chalk pastel" brush in PSCS3 and scatter the edges a little to get a nice watery effect for the base of the water. I admit on the water I did tend to drop the opacity down to blend and eyedrop-blend the edges together. About 40% opacity at times, but that's the lowest I'll go nowadays it seems.
Here's a screenshot to help you further see what I mean.. [link]
I tend to switch up this one brush in a variety of different ways to achieve the effects I like I reduce scatter to create clean, crisp edges... and fuzz it up for water, clouds, and so on...
I hope that helps?

Yes, thank you, that's actually really helpful! I notice you work on layers, too -- do you find that to be helpful? I wasn't sure people did when they were painting when there's no line art, but I guess I was wrong.

mynti In reply to henry-james [2010-03-26 04:59:19 +0000 UTC]
Yep... I throw the back stuff on the background layer... sky, the water base, the big blobs I start out with at the beginning. Then I layer it according to how it looks in the picture plane.. midground in the middle, foreground on the top layer... signature, details on the very top layer. This allows me to say... put clouds in the sky later behind the trees without having to repaint branches or paint around them.
Working in layers is one of the biggest advantages to digital painting vs. traditional. I have lassoed a tree and scaled it down without effecting anything else. I can warp and correct my paintings because they are layered logically in this fashion It makes my digital work much more accurate and interesting usually... I enjoy it!
Try working the way you feel most comfortable, but experiment with techniques and workflow methods... I have done this many times and usually learn from the experience, even if I do not work the same way 100% of the time.
For really fast paintings (30 minutes or so) .... I paint on one layer. That's usually the foundation layer (the "background" layer) for my longer paints.

lol you probably don't suck at everything else, your probably just better at painting but still a good drawer! We all have a medium that we're better at using, but if someone cant draw they can paint, unless of course its some abstract piece, but im talking about something such as a portrait
But then there is other mediums like photography which you could suck at, but im mainly talking about 'drawing' arts.. so lets not go there, i cant be bothered
