Avid? Do you need to submit something for the film category too?
How about being a senior mentor as well? Let me know!

Naw. I loved majoring in film but I haven't done anything with it except some dabbling in 3D since then. I can help out if people really want help, but it's been 3 years since I touched avid, I'm going to be, if not already, outmoded

Well what do you mean, mentorship? I figure that's what the networking group is for, isn't it? So people can contact me if they want some help?

You are pretty much on target. The club should help people find others that may be able to help out on a project or a collaboration. But there is a particular folder for what I've termed Senior Mentors, or those who are willing to teach/critique others at their request. It sounded to me based on your submission that you wanted to participate at that level and based on your experience would be good at it. I just wanted some clarification before I placed you in a category you weren't aware of. What do you think?

mynti In reply to DA-Networking [2007-12-18 21:58:50 +0000 UTC]
Sure. I already do critiques whenever anyone sends me a note or a message. A recent example was cocacolagirlie (who I now watch to help her out with any new drawings she might do.. that's how I saw your group actually ) Here's the critique: [link] If this sort of thing is along the right lines of what you're looking for, then add me to the mentors
I'm more comfortable critiquing paintings vs. photomanips; simply because I only do photomanipulation commercially and not for artwork.

In college, yeah. I took a glassblowing class as an elective.

Well, you can sure make a lot of mistakes, but it is soooo enjoyable. I still have some of my glass pieces.. a small watering jug type thing for my little plants, it has a spout, handle, and top to put the water in... I've made a bunch of glasses, christmas ornaments.. stuff like that. I'm not really that great though, not a master! But it's fun! I did some glass sand sculptures, too, those are tricky to not make sand pockets in, but basically you create a negative sculpture in the sand (doing it in wet sand makes it easier to mold) and then pour liquid glass into the mold, and press the interior to make it hollow and to spread the glass evenly. Many of those, though, ended up with sand pockets and I tossed after the class was over. One came out decently, I polished it and gave that one as a gift

Totally! Sometimes if you poke around art colleges, you can find someone in the glassblowing major who shares/rents a glass studio, usually the graduates. They usually charge a fee each time you go for the materials and let you work there if it's not busy. However, I'd suggest a glassblowing class first.. it can be a little dangerous if you don't follow the safety rules

This is really quite nice... "I don't do designs for free", good for you. I'm more on the programming side of the web (and mainframe, and well anything) than design, but I still get asked tons of questions... can you review my site (translation "my site stinks, can you fix it"), so I feel your pain. "Feel free to contact me for commissions", since I joined DA only because I collect art, I'll have to check out your gallery a little more closely and think of some potential ideas.

Haha. Well, what programming languages do you know/how experienced are you? I'm currently looking for programmers when I expand my office into a small company, maybe next year if I feel the need to do so. I simply have too many clients to keep up with the demand, and I prefer designing over coding

Hubby-N-Dad In reply to mynti [2007-12-18 22:27:20 +0000 UTC]
Having too many clients is a very good thing, congrats! But, I sincerely doubt I'd be the type of programmer you'd want on staff starting a company.... (12+ yrs programming experience, have managed an IT department specific to web development).... but to answer your question (I'll limit it to web): SQL, VBscript, JavaScript, ActionScript, ASP, .Net Studio, Ajax, XML, XLT, HTML, CSS and there are probably more I'm forgetting. I do however have a list of questions I've used when interviewing programmers, if you're ever interested. Good luck!

Haha. Well I have to say you sound perfect but it depends on if you'd like/would be able to do some freelance work. I have a few other people in mind already but we can talk more about that if you want, I'd love to see your work
I checked out your page, so sweet all the commissions you do of your family. Grats on the beautiful daughter, too

Hubby-N-Dad In reply to mynti [2007-12-19 00:33:40 +0000 UTC]
I haven't done freelance work in a loooonnnnnggggg time, but I might consider it if something perked my interest. Unfortunately, all my development has been internal here at work (been here since I graduated from college, eons ago) either on the intranet or a mainframe application. So I'd probably have to mock something up if you ever wanted to see what I can do.
Thanks for the kind words about my commissions and my daughter, who definitely gets her good looks from mom.

Haha. Well I will certainly keep you in mind, maybe contact you in second quarter to see how my new office goes first... I don't want to launch a design company without a few consultants and maybe a full-time office assistant.
Haha. Sure, purely observation about that

It's a networking group so people can contact anyone in the club for critiques or advice or commissions or what-have-you. I think it's a neat idea It's still a rather new thing, I think.

3-7 books a week is a lot. I usually read 2 books a week. Mostly History and Research books about history
That keeps my brain working and working and working
Love your gallery and your new ID. Looks great !!

Haha. Well, I'm used to reading! After I graduated college, I started in on all the reading I wanted to do but hadn't had time for because of schoolwork.
This isn't my devID, it's for the da-networking group

I know it isn't your devID because it says NetworkID just liked it the way you made it and about the reading is like the same here too. After school ( some centuries ago ) I started reading everything I wanted to read for a long time !!

I've read 5 this week. I grew up reading, my mom reads more than I do.
I used to climb trees in the summertime and read books in the branches, was really fun
The only problem is when I work really long hours, then sometimes I pass on reading and sleep instead

I envy you with all my heart and some of my duodenum. The only time I have to read is my half-hour lunchbreak and maybe an odd evening or morning... never more than an hour a day. I'm glad if I've had three books a month!

mynti In reply to wyldhoney [2007-12-18 19:41:07 +0000 UTC]
Haha. I'm a really fast reader >.> I usually only spend max 4 hours a day readin' unless I'm off from work... but painting comes before reading I think my average is 80 pages an hour, depending on difficulty and how many words per page. Some of the older archaic english ones take way longer though. And reading in french, well. That's a lot slower

wyldhoney In reply to mynti [2007-12-18 19:53:16 +0000 UTC]
English also takes me a bit longer than Dutch, but it depends also on the writer, of course. I find Terry Pratchett reads way easier than Stephen Fry, for instance.

Terry Pratchett! If you like him, you should try Tom Holt's The Portable Door. I read Holt's other books, but that one is the best of the bunch.
