The Gate to Tartarus was first mentioned in the season two episode: It's about Time, when Cerberus suddenly appeared in Ponyville but was soon befriended by Fluttershy. Twilight Sparkle then returned Cerberus to the Gate of Tartarus to assumedly guard the Equestrian Underworld.
