Description I made the mistake of trying my hand at a Speed Draw/Time Lapse video again: youtu.be/NsWWKbWPljg

*Reupload because I was a dummy and scheduled it for the wrong day the first time so the video didn't exist*

This time I got a bit more experimental.

For some reason, I was really wanting to draw a hot-air balloon. Unfortunately for me what I thought was going to just be a practice sketch turned out to be really good and I wanted to use it, so, unfortunately, I didn't get to film that portion of the process.

Side Note: Do you guys know that most illustrative/stylistic drawings of hot-air balloons that you'll find online have a lot of variation in what elements they keep from the real deal? Because yeah...I got to learn the hard way.  I did my best.

I did this on my mixed media paper, and as you'll see in the video I started off on a different playing field than usual; Once I finished the regular line art of the sketch, I went in an tried some inked shading that comes across as pretty subtle in the final piece. I might try that more often! (Although next time I try it while filming I will definitely take it off the lightbox since I only realized after the fact this time that keeping it on the lightbox was completely unnecessary for that step.)

When I started coloring I laid down a light blue base for the background with an alcohol-based Prismacolor Brushmarker. Then I went on top of that with a Viviva watercolor. And I learned the valuable lesson that putting down an alcohol marker base miraculously makes watercolor behave differently.  I'm not sure if you can tell in the video, but I did struggle with trying to get it to cooperate with me . My biggest issue was really just that for some reason the left side was blending out pretty smoothly but the right side wanted to be patchy. Still, I managed and I was able to doctor it up with other things later on.

When I first started, I had thought about doing watercolor for the whole thing, but once I'd drawn all those tiny little details (the paper was like 5"x7") I decided that wouldn't be a very good idea.

I actually ended up using my Zebra Mild Liners for the base color on the balloon after picking a color palette and deciding I liked the way the colors of those markers looked to best represent said palette. And they did pretty well, though since they're waterbased I didn't push my luck with too much layering. And to be fair, 15 colors isn't a ton to layer and blend with anyway. Instead, once I did a base and some light shading with them, I switched to my white Prismacolor and some Faber Castell Polychromos (in colors matching the palette) to add highlights and deepen the shadows. Then I took them to the background to try and clean it up, though there was still one patch I had to hide with a cloud, but it worked out to look pretty good, I think. Then the border, which I did in orange since what little orange I used on the balloon got very very lost.

Speaking of orange, I'm going to apologize here for parts of the video looking a little yellow/orange. I didn't realize that was happening while I was filming because I was focusing on the drawing . It's kind of obvious though that it was happening because the camera was trying to adjust for the blue-ness once I filled the background in. I guess now I know why we do backgrounds last, huh?

I don't know how "regular" these videos are going to be, but for now, I am open to doing one every once in a while when I feel like it, at least now that I've mostly figured out what to do for a filming set up. But I think I'll stick to just these speed draw/time lapses for a little while. They're complicated enough to put together as it is .

Still, I am really happy with how the art itself came out.  It makes me happy to look at~

I titled it "Floating Away" since there's obviously no person in the basket or a rope holding it in place, so that's kinda what it's doing, realistically
