Description
Ammit or Ammut is a well known demon or goddess of ancient Egypt’s afterlife that would devour the souls of the impure. When a human had passed, they were brought to the Judgement hall where Osiris, Anubis, Thoth, and Ma’at would judge the person’s character using their heart, a scale, and the feather of truth and judgement Ma’at. The reason why the heart (ib) was weighed was because it was believed to house thoughts, emotions, and memory which defined a person. If the person was fair and just in their life, the heart will be lighter than the feather and the human can continue to eternal peace. However, if the heart was heavier, Ammit would devour the soul, causing the person to cease to exist or wander without rest (varies from sources).
