An old picture from 2002, when I was less than 2 years old. We were going to California and stopped at this hotel, where my older brother Max started playing Pokémon Crystal (I believe from how the cartridge looks) on his Game Boy Color.

I was on the bed next to him, and I heard strange beeping noises coming from behind me. I crawled over to next to his right shoulder so I could see where the noise was coming from, and it captivated me that there were now little dots blinking and moving on his screen.

Your first Pokémon battle is one hell of an experience when you aren’t even old enough to go to preschool.

From that day forward, Max helped introduce me to video games, the Internet, and other necessary things brothers should show. I’ll always be grateful to him, to our parents for supporting our hobby (while setting good limits), and to Nintendo and Game Freak for making this memory possible. It’s conceptually timeless.
