So I didn't read the title first, and I spent a good 30 seconds thinking, "Two leaves? Double leaves? Handy leaves?" before I got the joke

I was thinking that it 'happened in the past' and that the person is glad it did happen because NOW he/she is happy, the use of 'Are' kind of feels unsure, and bit like wishful thinking, but the use of the past tense gives it a little more assurance. Just my take.
