i think ads are made for self promotion, fan pages are made because your fans take it upon themselves to organize, spread your name, and search it independently.
but yeah, I get what you mean.
they're subscribers because they see you have a facebook page and get exited, whereas a real fan base are those who search your work on facebook and get exited to see there's a group. when I see that link on your page, I can't help but feel the subscribers are more facebook's fan then yours.

Celebrities and companies have facebook 'pages' dedicated for the fans or consumers, this is the same concept, in this day and age if you don't work hard to promote your work then you'll get nowhere. To me, the facebook page is just another medium for those who prefer that place over lets say Here or Tumblr. I understand your take on the issue but if you're going to be anal about the concept of everything then you'll spend your life waiting for things to happen instead of making them happen for you.
All of the big artists here on Deviantart are promoting their other accounts, it's just the way things are right now.

Thank you. Drawing digitally is mainly about converting what you were passionate about traditionally, so if you're into painting then you should look into the tools that enable you to paint. I've always been passionate about illustration and water color so that's what I looked into and thankfully succeeded. Best of luck to you.
