Nanfe, this picture is penetrating to me. It penetrates me in more ways than one. To me it represents youth that I never got to enjoy in my teens and twenties, and now there it is dead and decayed. I wish that I could have enjoyed those times like how I wanted to so that I could have been married by now and with a family. But it is dead, decayed, and sad.
The background. It looks like she is standing in front of a Japanese flag that might have been draped over her casket and left there at the time she was buried. What was once white is now by yellowed and putrefied by time and decay. The circle that was once red, is now faded in the center and divorced from the red hue that it originally was. I'm guessing that she's Japanese and that her home country was Japan. Life that she wanted to live was in Japan.
The girl. She's mostly decayed and almost all bones. But the basics of who she was are still there. She had very nice long black hair. She must have taken very good care of her hair, and in the picture it still looks nice and flowing. She liked being a girl, and wouldn't have wanted to be anything else. She's wearing a black corset, and satin sleeves are partially covering her arms. If she had skin and flesh, I could see her with a large cleavage line; I guess she liked dressing sexy at times. She's dressed like she would love to be out somewhere with some friends or a boyfriend out on a Friday or Saturday night. She was young and wanted to live.
Looking deeper. I think someone she knew killed her. She has her right arm in the back, and her left arm covering her navel. Maybe she was stabbed by someone she knew and trusted. Her head is tilted to the side with her flesh eye closed. Looking at her facial expression - she doesn't look bothered or disturbed, or confused. Instead she looks deeply saddened and hurt, like she knows why she's dead and who killed her.
After all that has decayed and has become dust - her heart is still there in her chest; colored with a subdued red. The lipstick on her face is still read also. Even in death she still has the will to live, and to love.
While writing the above critique I was listening to two songs. The first song is "Beyond the Reef," by Lisa Ono. The other song is "She's Gone," by Black Sabbath. Those two song really go well with this picture. I hope you enjoyed my writing to this picture.
