I've decided to revisit this show in my time of need. With all this horrible shit going on in the world, I needed a distraction. Coming back to this show felt like being reunited with an old friend. I know it kind of fell from grace in its later seasons with a lot of people, but this show will always have a special place in my heart. The sheer amount of bittersweet nostalgia I felt from rewatching the first season was enough to make me want to cry. I kept being reminded of when I was twelve years old and I would design fusions between me and my friends' characters. How excited we would get when we talked about this show. Growing up and looking at all the fanart people would make was like magic. It inspired me to draw and to write stories. It undoubtedly changed the course of my artistic career and it serves as an inspiration for my webcomic today.

There's a sort of childlike wonder that I get from these earlier episodes, that as a wistful teen facing down the encroaching darkness of adulthood, resonates with me more than anything else. More than romance or angst. It's the main reason why I one day plan on writing a children's series.
