Description
Assalaamu alaikum [peace be to you],Each one of us lives with a purpose that shapes our life and our actions. When we take on a purpose for our life, we strive to align our actions and deeds to serve that purpose. In our search for peace with God, we first consider the purpose of our creation and our life on earth. Secondly, we consider how to align our actions to serve that purpose. When our purpose and actions are in sync, we can approach a more peaceful and meaningful existence.
Intention (Niyya) is the fundamental element that elevates mundane acts into great virtue, drawing immense rewards. Intentions are just as important as the deed itself, if not more so. Our eyes can tell us the form of an action, but only the intention determines its weight. The last Prophet of Islam -peace and blessings be upon him- urges us to make sure that our intentions are for the sake of Allah so that we do not fill our lives with hollow motions.
Mohammed -peace be upon him- once said:
إِنَّمَا الأَعْمَالُ بِالنِّيَّاتِ، وَإِنَّمَا لِكُلِّ امْرِئٍ مَا نَوَى
Actions are but by intentions and every person will have only what he intended.
This is one of the firm hadiths which serves as an axis of Islam.
The first sentence of the hadith, "إِنَّمَا الأَعْمَالُ بِالنِّيَّاتِ" (Actions are but by intentions) is a declaration that the voluntary actions of a person are a consequence only of that person's purpose to perform the act or bring it into existence.
The second sentence, "وَإِنَّمَا لِكُلِّ امْرِئٍ مَا نَوَى" (and every person will have only what he intended.) is a declaration of religion's judgment of the act in question. Thus, if the intention motivating an act is good, then performance of the act is good and the person receives its reward. As for the corrupt intention, the action it motivates is corrupt, and the person receives punishment therefor. If the intention motivating the act is permissible, then the action is permissible, and the actor receives neither reward nor punishment. Therefore, acts in themselves, their goodness, foulness or neutrality, from the perspective of religion, are judged according to the actor's intention that caused their existence. All deeds that are devoid of the proper intention are vain. A person will only be deserving of a reward for his good deeds if he performed them for the sake of the God and not for some ulterior motive.
In the same way that an admirable deed is rendered worthless without intentions, the smallest deeds can become huge. The reward for a sincere deed is limitless, and will be multiplied according to the greatness of the intention and the mercy of Allah. A deed with a good intention is like a secret between you and Allah. It is something that you can look forward to when you finally meet Him, because only He knows the work you did in your heart to make sure the intention was strong. So be sure to guard those intentions well.
Example:
a. you plant a tree so that people and animals benefit from it. but you don't do it for the sake of the God.
consequence:
- people will benefit from your tree
-animals will benefit from your tree.
b. you plant a tree so that people and animals benefit from it. but you do it for the sake of the God Almighty aiming to please him.
consequence:
- people will benefit from your tree
- animals will benefit from your tree.
- God will reward you for your good intention and he will reward you for every creature that benefits from the tree.
I think you can see the difference...
I hope this was beneficial.

Amazing article!
I have a question.
If you do a good deed so many times that it just becomes a normal thing and sometimes, you even forget you were doing it to please God, but it WAS there in the back of your head that you ARE doing it for God, but often you forget, and just do the deed like you do normally, will Allah (swt) still reward you?

Jazak'Allah for taking the time to answer.
My guess would be that he would, because he is Ar-Rahmaan and Ar-Raheem, Most Gracious, Ever Merciful.
And the fact that he himself says that he rewards every single good deed, even if it be the spoonful of food you put in your wife's mouth.
So I think he would.
