I've also gone nearly eight years with photoshop and never knew what on earth the 'flow' setting did.
It's real handy, though - I'm using it a ton!

It's kind of like opacity, but what flow will do is allow you to more effectively blend colors. Going over the same area multiple times with the brush on a low flow will sort of build up the intensity, resulting in a more 'painterly' effect. It's real good stuff - give it a shot!Β
