Description
Rachel was walking back to the pond where her real body lay at the bottom. It had been a hectic few days and she was looking forward to a rest. Just as she rounded the rock formation to the pond, she saw Jack sitting in the snow. ‘Jack? What is he doing here?’ She wondered as she walked up towards him. “Jack, what are you doing here?”“I-I….” He stammered before he sighed, “I feel useless.”
“Useless?” She questioned. Jack was usually so chipper and fun but he seemed down. That’s when she noticed the tears in his eyes. She sat down next to him, not caring that her jeans were getting wet from the snow. “Jack, what’s wrong?”
“How could you not know?! It’s just-it’s just HORRIBLE!” He unexpectedly shouted. She jumped back at his shout but saw the hurt, sadness and hopelessness in his eyes. She realized what could do this to him, “Oh…you mean what happened at the school don’t you?”
Jack looked away from her but nodded. She looked at him. He seemed so…broken. Hesitantly, she reached for him and pulled him into a hug. She felt his body tremble from unshed tears and said, “I know you’re hurting; I’m sorry.”
“I-I couldn’t do anything! I couldn’t save them!” She listened as he poured his heart out to her. He needed to vent and she was there to listen. She was shocked when he broke free of her grip, then he tightly took her in his arms. She held him in her arms even as they fell backwards. He sobbed into her shoulder for several minutes. When he was calming down, she said, “I know how you feel. As a guardian of death, I see a lot of things that can drive a normal person mad. And I know that you are a guardian of childhood, and the loss of 20 children is weighing heavily on your usually joyful heart. But why aren’t you with the other guardians?”
He didn’t speak for a bit but finally he said, “I…..I needed to be with someone more like me….who still thinks kinda like a kid….the others are hurting too but….we’re still…not the same level. I…I needed you.”
“I see. But I was working in Japan for the last three weeks. How long have you been waiting for me?”
Jack shrugged, “I think three days.”
“Three days?!” Jack shrugged. She couldn’t believe that he waited days for her to return from her guardian duties. He rubbed the back of his head in a comforting motion. “Well, I’m sorry for making you wait. I’m here now. Tell me whatever you want or we can just sit here.”
Hours later….
Jack was asleep with his head in Rachel’s lap. She had covered him with her jacket and was just letting him sleep when one of Bunny’s tunnels opened. The 6 foot anthro-rabbit climbed out of his tunnel and sighed with relief, “There’s the frostbite. Is he alright?”
“Emotionally exhausted.” She replied. “But I’m sure you all are. It is a terrible tragedy; so many young lives cut short, unrealized dreams, futures that will never be. North must be pretty sad, too. So close to Christmas.”
“Yes…though I guess we never stopped to think that the fact Frostbite interacts with children more than we do would cause him to feel the lose so hard.” Bunny said as he sat next to Rachel and Jack. “If you want I could take him somewhere where he can rest and you wouldn’t have to baby-sit him.”
:It’s alright. He’s not bothering me.” Rachel said, playing with Jack’s hair. Bunny smiled, “You have a very patient heart, ya know?”
“Ha. If you think that you should see me working with my partners; Hisoka and I almost fight teeth and claw every time we get in the same room.” She smirked causing Bunny to chuckle. Jack sighed, finally sleeping peacefully with pleasant dreams but still keeping the 20 children’s memory snuggled safely in his heart just as Bunny, Tooth, Sandy, North, even Rachel and her partners in the Administery of Hades would.
