Description "-But what use would a mind have if no force in nature could hurt you?"

"-Well, it always helps to remember... and never forget!"

Aside from just being cool, I drew this intelligent sauropod to illustrate one of my educated suspicions about these great animals - namely, the presence of soft-tissue display organs on the skull and (maybe) the neck. If you look at the level of pneumaticity in a sauropod skeleton and observe some of their weird skulls, there is no way something weird WASN'T involved in the whole structure.

Interesting, as all your creations are.

Man, this really floored me both in concept and execution, but then i'm entirely out of the loop of what dinosaur has what on its face now, haha. All I can say is: [link]

My favorite and probably too-oft-used question: how long do you think this took you to finish?

On-and-off, about 5 days in total. I first made a big drawing on paper, scanned it and drew over it in photoshop.

oh, really! This looks like a vector ... I imagine that it was much less of a hassle to actually draw by hand, however.

Well, you can also make this into a vector pretty easily - there's an automatic way to do it in photoshop.

I wasn't 100%ly serious on the golf part, but thanks for clearing it up.

Somewhat stupidly I thought it was holding a golf-club, but mind you, something that big would have a pipe about that size.

I'd love to see what you would do with one of my unfinished sketches - I too have a sapient (unfinished) sauropod. I went with the braincase in the area between the scapulae.

This guy, however, is ROCKIN'.

The prehensile tongue made me laugh, but the notion that brontosaurus could develop such an odd developmental display when nearly all other Cretaceous fauna used color seems a bit unorthodox, but that doesn't mean it cant be right though

Nice, but given their limited numbers due to the scale of the creatures in Question, they would be unlikely to develop technology and civilization.

nemo-ramjet In reply to Imperator-Zor [2010-06-15 08:50:07 +0000 UTC]

I agree, I don't think we'd see an industrial civilization with these guys. But they could become pastoral nomads or agrarian tribes.

Imperator-Zor In reply to nemo-ramjet [2010-06-15 09:05:39 +0000 UTC]

Even still its gotta suck for the spceies, they might well be great at mathmatics and capable of doing incredible things if given the chance, but the poor bastards can just mill about at a technological level at best comprable until a major natural disaster whipes them out or an alien conquest fleet comes by.

nemo-ramjet In reply to Imperator-Zor [2010-06-15 11:36:25 +0000 UTC]

I dunno. People seem to have done all right for +- 1 million years without any significant technology whatsoever. If anything, technology might be more likely to wipe intelligent species out than natural disasters or UFOs.

Though I'm rather skeptical of the possibility of a sapient sauropod, this is awesome! I like the feather-like edges of the scutes on this guy!

I'm skeptical (but not completely opposed to) about the presence of display structures like that (at least the nose one) but I can't argue, having not looked at the remains my self.

This is really cool, the display organs really make it unusual, so does the prehensile tounge. This kind of unusual is my definition of awesome, good jom, it is fantastic. The overlapping plates give it a real archaic, alice in wonderland-ish appearance. It suits it.
