I like this painting. Yeah she's not the same body type as the one in the movie. I still like both body types and am not picky of how the character is drawn. I don't find it distasteful nor do I find it "Fatphobic" as some people may call it. What you have is a stunning piece of work that obviously has great effort and skill put into it.Β

Probably the most distasteful part of this thing is some of the comments I've been reading which is "to each their own" but go somewhere else for your "life lessons" cause I'm sure this artist has heard it before.Β

For the guys who don't like this... draw her yourself if you don't like the interpretation.Β

I find it less fatphobic and more....kinda....leaving the variety of the original character designs to the wayside.

With things like this, I don't understand why people don't find variety in a cast's character design pleasing.

I mean.....character designs can get REALLY boring if you stick with the same height, build, hair style, et cetera.

There's a much smaller window for variety with a basic template, even if it is there.

Perrobang In reply to Concepts-by-Kae [2016-04-04 19:14:50 +0000 UTC]

True in what you say on character designs since it's very important to add unique and recognizable design to each character. And it can be redundant drawing the same figure over again.Β

But you make the assumption that the way the artist is drawing the character means that they didn't find the original character design pleasing in the first place.Β

I could also make the same argue that if you draw the characters in your own style (anime, cartoony, realistic, etc.), you could make the assumption that we didn't find the original style of the characters pleasing.Β

You can't know for sure on that and neither can I . But just because the artist doesn't draw in a variety of different body types, does it mean that they find other builds less pleasing. If the artist wants to draw her in the build, who are we to judge them for that?Β

Also there could be another factor in mind. What this artist does is getting paid for are pinups. And by the looks of it the artist is paid to do a specific type of pinups which in this case can be a little hard to deviate from that, especially if he/she are getting paid. If artists get paid to do specific types of body builds, then it's not all the artist's fault but also can be the audience/clients that pay him/her to do it.Β

Now in terms of whether the audience finds the original character's design less appealing is up to them. I personally don't mind to see different builds of the same characters. This artist may draw the character in different build but there will be others as well that will draw the character in any shape or style they want. But it doesn't make them see the original content less appealing.Β

I'm genuinely surprised it took so long for fanart like this to emerge on DeviantArt.Β  The very instant I saw previews of the movie, I expected to see art exactly like this.

Anything and everything is sexualized on the internet.

And on deviantART, diving into its depths will basically net you art for every fetish ever.

So, however unfortunate this may seem, this is incredibly tame and tasteful when it comes down to that.

Unless you're a masochist like me, you -probably- don't wanna look for worse examples....

Yeah.... if it's your art. If sadness is fat then draw her fat...

There's a difference between artistic style and just taking a character and bastardising it just because...

Asmodeus623 In reply to Lokier-Ame [2015-11-08 16:13:46 +0000 UTC]

Ok well now it just sounds like you're butt hurt cuz they wanted to draw a non fat sadness.

The thing is that many improvements are made by focusing on all the variety a character design is capable of.

And when one doesn't venture outside their comfort zone in art, they don't improve.

I'm not trying to talk down to anyone, but that's just kinda how that works. This person's art is lovely, but I don't understand willingly and knowingly placing limits on yourself the way you've described.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

Lokier-Ame In reply to Asmodeus623 [2015-11-09 00:49:40 +0000 UTC]

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Asmodeus623 In reply to Lokier-Ame [2015-11-09 04:13:11 +0000 UTC]

But my point is just that. There is no "correct". The artist drew what they felt like drawing.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 3

Concepts-by-Kae In reply to Asmodeus623 [2016-03-29 22:00:58 +0000 UTC]

There's only so far that that goes, though.

For example, you can't tell an up-and-coming artist that mangled proportions are okay because they claim it's their style and they want it that way.

Telling a bit of a white lie is fine if they get sensitive and not....you know, obnoxious....but either way, very shortly they're going to hate the art they made at that time.

More than other aged art, that is.

I speak from personal experience. No one ever gave me helpful feedback like that, and it put me years behind.

Its awesome, I like the interpretation done. Complainers go away. Think first: Why is the emotion "sadness" shown as a small chubby girl with glasses? Cannot those kind of girls be happy or angry? Especially for kids the movie is doing more harm in the way than this kind of interpretation ever could. I am looking forward to see the other emotions, please create them NeoArtCorE
