Yeah I thought of that too. But, you know, game mechanic. Never question physics in Nintendo games...or something like that.

Perhaps the device converts energy into mass? That would require a massive amount of energy, though... If the device defies the Law of Conservation of Energy and Mass, however, then it would be creating something that had simply not existed in this universe. In fact, it would likely throw off certain balances, and an overuse would create an increased gravitational pull, perhaps even reversing the outward expansion of the universe, thus causing an eventual implosion.
So basically, Splatoon is the cause of the eventual end of the universe.
