I've REALLY wanted to draw a new character reminiscent of my gothic, Tim Burton inspired roots of DA for quite a while now. Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to it.

Meet Winona! Born as a half human, half spider hybrid, Winona has been a social outcast all of her life. She was left behind by her parents when she was a baby on a old lady's doorstep. Naturally, when the old lady discovers the her, she is mortified by the baby's rather disturbing arachnoid appearance at first glance, but soon warms up to the strange baby girl when she realizes the babe means no harm, becoming her surrogate mother. The old lady makes it her sworn duty to protect this child from the rest of the world. As the years go by, Winona and the old lady grow a special bond with one another. But as Winona grows up, she yearns to have a life of her own outside of her mother's house. Her mother forbids it, however, knowing the outside world would be unkind to her daughter, reviling her as a horrible monster. Winona becomes restless and upset about her constant isolation, but gradually becomes more accepting of it over time, realizing she will never be seen as a normal girl.

By the time Winona reached her teenage years, the old lady had grown very old. When she passed away, Winona was devastated to lose both her mother and her only friend. From that point on, she was left heart-broken and all alone. As time went on, the house Winona resided in became the home of a small clutter of spiders in the upstairs attic. To cope with her growing sense of loneliness, Winona became well associated with the spiders in the attic to the point where she began to live among them on a regular basis, spending a majority of her time in the attic. When Winona was a little girl, whenever a spider was loose in the house, her mother always made sure to let them back outside and to never, EVER squash them, so that her daughter wouldn't be traumatized or have nightmares of being squashed herself. She had nothing but sympathy for such small creatures so similar to her.

Due to the constant isolation, Winona has become a shy, quiet, and introverted young lady. Though she desperately wants to experience the outside world, she's also very self-conscious about her appearance, constantly fearing what others will think of her if she ever steps outside her mother's house. her In her spare time, Winona loves to sing. Though she is shy about singing in front of others (Specifically, her mother), Winona likes to sing her favorite songs to herself to help raise her spirits as another means of aiding her loneliness. On top of that, she has a hobby of gardening her mother's rose garden in the backyard, which she tends to regularly. In the backyard, Winona's rose garden grows wildly, flourishing in a stunning array of colored roses, predominantly red ones. Before her passing, Winona's mother had taught her everything about tending her roses, especially the red roses, which were her favorite. To this day, red roses are very special to Winona, holding cherished, nostalgic memories of her mother's kindness and hospitality.

I'm not gonna lie. I was very heavily influenced by both Lapis Lazuli (Steven Universe) and Edward Scissorhands (1990), while drawing this piece . . . And it clearly shows.

While I definitely wanted to draw a human-spider hybrid character for a while, I didn't really feel up to it until recently. Specifically, after listening to the song "Out There" from Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996) (youtu.be/SZdKGul8XlQ ), which gave me enough inspiration to finally go through with the idea (Maybe that's the song Winona is singing in the lower-right corner?).

I really wanted to draw more characters in this in order to flesh out the story more, but I ran out of space. So I resorted to just focusing on Winona's character design (I couldn't even fit all of Winona's legs on the page! Ugh. I'm terrible at planning things out, sometimes.). I'll probably do a sequel piece to this so I can expand on Winona's story some more.
