Well, between the stress at work, the stress of trying to pay off my credit cards/car payments, trying to squeeze in time to draw before/after work and spending time with family, the one thing that's making me feel the most depressed right now, more than anything, is actually . . . Really stupid, especially when putting it in context.

It's about the recent Godzilla movies. I've been very frustrated with them since we first started getting new Godzilla movies in 2014. I've been disappointed with every Godzilla movie that has come out this past decade, especially the ones in-canon with Legendary Pictures' MonsterVerse. I was disappointed with Godzilla (2014), I was disappointed with Shin Godzilla (2016), I sure as hell was disappointed with that god-awful anime trilogy (2017-2018), and I'm especially disappointed with Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)!
But if there's one thing I'm disappointed more than the movies themselves, its the fandom surrounding them! The Godzilla fandom has gotten so toxic, nowadays, especially when it comes to the MonsterVerse movies! I can't express my opinion on KOTM without somebody lashing out at me, saying "You're not a real fan!" or "You're full of shit!" just because I have a different opinion on that movie. I feel like I'm the ONLY G-fan who thinks KOTM wasn't a good movie. From the point-of-view of the MonsterVerse fans, you're either with the fans who love it or you're with the critics who hate it. There is NO in between! In other words, there's no place for people like me who think the movie is just okay, but could've been, and SHOULD'VE been, a lot better than what we actually got.
I also just wanna clarify that I DO NOT hate The MonsterVerse. The MonsterVerse is not without its moments, but, so far, the franchise, as whole, has been very sloppily executed. So far, the only MonsterVerse movie I legitimately like is Kong: Skull Island (2017). Yeah, it's not mind-blowing or anything, but it delivered everything I expected for one of the early entries in a kaiju cinematic universe. As for G2014 and KOTM, I would only recommend those movies to the most die-hard Godzilla fans who feel obligated to see every Godzilla movie ever made. But, even then, I'd tell them to go in with very low expectations. While I initially loved G2014 when I first saw it in the theater, and while it's not without it's moments of genuine awe and wonder, on repeated viewings, G2014 is a lame disappointment, and KOTM was a sloppy mess. However, I'm not saying it's completely unsalvageable. With some thoughtful writing and some decent character development, the MonsterVerse has the potential to be a great cinematic universe in its own right. But, as of now, it feels very rushed and very poorly put together.
I, honestly, had a lot more fun just re-watching the old Godzilla movies in preparation for KOTM than I did when watching the movie itself. After having to wait 5 years for that movie to be released, I really hoped Legendary were gonna deliver something great with KOTM. I thought they were gonna make a great movie. But I guess I'm a worthless idiot for believing that, too. I've never felt so angry and so embarrassed to be a Godzilla fan when it comes to movies like G2014 and KOTM. So much so, that it makes me experience moments of extreme depression whenever I think back on these awful memories.
Following my disappointment with KOTM, I'm feeling extremely burned out by the MonsterVerse. Now with Godzilla vs. Kong coming out next year, this is their very last chance to win me over. If GVK doesn't learn from its predecessor's mistakes and delivers a genuinely great movie that pleases fans, critics, and audiences alike, there is NO redeeming the MonsterVerse. If I come across reviews, saying we have to put up with seeing the monsters fight in constant darkness and constant cutaways to boring human characters that we don't care about again, I'm not even gonna bother seeing GVK in theaters! I'm not wasting my time and money on another mediocre MonsterVerse movie again!
Bottom line, I'm tired of being disappointed and I'm tired of people dictating what I can and can't like! As a longtime Godzilla fan, I only want the best that Godzilla has to offer because, frankly, I feel like fans deserve a lot better at this point.

I don't feel like I'm nearly as good as people make me out to be, especially when compared to all the great artists already present here on DA. I just like to draw because I like being able to express my ideas in a physical form.

And you should to. Don't worry about just being a great artist, be yourself as an artist and do it the way you can do it. Really bring out your potential and go where the wind takes you
