Actually, pointing down is not bad in any way.
Typically, the direction does not make any difference as it just means the direction you are looking at it. Outside of that, most people would use a standard one for protective rituals and an inverted one for banishment or conjuration ones, as an alternative to the method you draw it in.

A bit of everything actually, it is a 6cm thick book I am drawing/writing over the top of what it used to be!

I stick the new pages over the old ones! Or in the case of the paintings I do them directly over the top of the writing/picture in the book
