Description
Since Zephyr has so much hair my mind occasionally wanders towards the "Dad doesn't know how to do his daughter's hair" trope. Except Jango is a goddamn elf, so he probably popped out of the womb knowing six different braiding techniques and the optimal method for adding adornments. (He also does nails uwu)I guess this is the part where I have to explain why Jango is Zephyr's dad-by-default.
When Zephyr popped into existence, her mother (Pippo) was already friends with Jango. It wasn't long after that when Pippo and Jango just sort of, started living together? It wasn't ever discussed or planned, it just sort of happened. So, Jango was around literally since the day Zephyr was born and he was pretty much always a part of the household. For a long time, from his perspective, Zephyr was just sort of "that little creature Pippo made". He didn't show active interest in her, but meant nothing negative by it. He would be there if he was called upon. From Zephyr's perspective, Jango was "the weird guy who lives with us", but being a young child she didn't really see anything out of the ordinary about that. She would treat him like she would treat any other member of her family and tried not to feel bummed when he didn't know what he was supposed to for her in return.
That is until Zephyr turned eight years old, and she started to show signs of Wild Magic. Pippo tried her best to teach her daughter how to safely control her magic, but it was a complete failure. Pippo deals in the Divine, she knows nothing of sorcery. But do you know who does? Jango does, and he just so happened to have been born with Wild Magic too. So of course being unable to deny a request from Pippo, Jango became Zephyr's mentor. It was very difficult at first.
Jango never knew his own father (normal for a drow), had a sword put in his hand before the age of 10 (also normal for a drow) and when he and his brother were orphaned as children, he was thrown into the military (not common, but normal given the circumstance) where he stayed for literal centuries. The guy did not have the background to be a compassionate, patient, mentor. That didn't stop him from trying. It took a lot of mistakes, fights, tears, and time to build something that worked. Despite how shitty it started, it was good for both of them in them end. Zephyr learned how to be a great sorceress along with every other skill Jango could teach, Jango learned how to be more actively compassionate, and they both learned how to be a tighter family. (Don't call him "dad" though, he hates that.)
I think this is a day where Jango was too hungover/too unprepared/too just-not-into-it for a proper lesson. They just chilled that day, doing flower braids and talking about whatever Zephyr wanted to talk about. One of those happy days amongst tough ones.
