Description
Overview
The Puckoo is a very simple minded animal that doesn't have a lot of intelligence. They travel together in "dunces" in the wild, and are a prime target for many predators in the world. It seems their only means of defense is to reproduce quicker than they are hunted. These strange fish looking chicken creatures eat rocks. That's right, rocks. Well, more like the build-up on a rock. Anything on the surface, such as bacteria, moss, plant matter, insects, all of it gets consumed once a Puckoo starts sucking on a rock. Then they spit the rock itself back out.
They lay 10-20 eggs at a time, and breed throughout the year. These things multiply faster than rabbits.
They love water and floating on the surface, but cannot fly. They will dive in shallow ponds to fetch the best kinds of algae covered rocks.
Named after the sound they make. Imagine a dunce of Puckoo wandering around going "puckoo puckoo puckoo-puck puck puck puckoo-puckoo" and so on. It's quite distinctive and Wyngrew can usually recognize it.
Only domestic or recently feral Puckoo are colorful. Wild Puckoo are grey with a greenish tinge (like wild carp), the better to blend in with the rocky banks they forage around. If a population of domestic puckoo go free and survive, their offspring will revert to wild coloration within a few generations (like Koi do).
When breeding in the wild, male Puckoos build nests and the females come around to inspect them... males with the best nests get the most mates. Males will fight over the best nesting sites. They also decorate their nests with rocks and will steal the best rocks from one another. Female Puckoos lay their eggs in the chosen nest and leave the males the duty of guarding them. When the bubs hatch, they imprint on the nearest creature (normally the father in the wild) and will follow them everywhere, but are otherwise independent and able to forage for themselves from the moment they hatch. When threatened, a dunce of Puckoos will herd the vulnerable bubs to the center of the group for protection. If a body of water is nearby they will make a dash for it in a group.
In Wyngro Society
Puckoos are kept as your basic, easy farm animal, and harvested for eggs and meat. They taste like fish, but with the texture of chicken. The closest we can describe the meat is almost like canned tuna. (But fresher, lol)
They are kept in coops much like chickens, and fed Puckoo prepacked food. (Hard pellets covered in nutrients to simulate rocks in the wild)
Males have a distinct fin crest and whiskers similar to a catfish! They are not often kept in farms that only harvest eggs. Meat farms prefer to butcher the males as some say they have more flavor. While females are kept to lay eggs.
They are a farm animal, and thus not really kept as "pets" because they are so likely to wander and will not really bond with you. But some Wyngrew name them regardless and like to keep them as such.
Domestic Puckoo usually only have one male available for breeding but they adapt just fine to this. Coops for puckoos should be built with nooks for sleeping and a nesting area with sand and pebbles. Collecting the eggs is simple: if the male is imprinted on the owner, the male can be easily distracted and eggs taken freely as puckoos cannot count (it helps to leave at least one recently laid egg behind).
If the male is not trusting he may have to be run off or locked out of the coop when he is going out for food in the morning. Recently laid eggs can be distinguished from older ones by color as they are a little darker.
Domestic puckoo thrive best if there is at least a shallow pond in their enclosure... they love the water. A large pond is best however as a small one will quickly be mucked up with their poop.
There are "fancy" breeds of domestic puckoo (think butterfly koi or fancy goldfish in appearance) with longer fins, but these are bred for show only, they tend to have meaner dispositions than the standard breed for some reason.
Can I Make One?
Yes you may! No requirements need to be met in order to make and design a Puckoo! As long as you do your best to follow this guide! They are OPEN to create!
Do I have to be a part of the Wyngro group to make one?
Nope! Feel free to make as many as you want, whether you have a Wyngro or not!
If you make one for your Wyngro, remember that they do not make good pets and Alma will kill you if you bring one into the Nook! (They poop everywhere and will make a mess and wander all over)
If your Wyngro has a farm or the ability to make a coop, they might be able to keep some!

Could a puckoo encounter a wingling egg and basically become its caretaker? I'm looking for subspecies my wingling could have been taken care of and then in the future they live together, and being raised by a puckoo is an amazing idea that is bound to go wrong!

No. XD that would be like a chicken being able to take care of a new born baby. The infant would likely die.
Remember that Wynglings need milk too! So it's pretty unrealistic for them to be raised on their own or by some animal.

I just said it would not be realistic for any animal to care for a wyngling.
And I also already told you that we only send invites once the wyngling is approved!

I was wondering if it was possible for Wyngrew to incubate Puckoo eggs? And if they can, does this mean that when they hatch, having no one else, they'll imprint on the Wyngrow and follow them around like they would the dad?

Nestly In reply to SolistheSun [2017-01-26 03:19:52 +0000 UTC]
They don't imprint-- they're too derpy. They won't follow a Wyngro around, they'll wander aimlessly and get lost.
But they can be incubated just like chicken eggs!

i can just imagine the amount of times wynglings have attempted to sneak puckoos into the nook, only to be caught or have them die [they are kids, what would they know about feeding them? XD]
tbh those times would be hilarious

You can make a Wyngro for free too! They start out simple, but they get cool features as you draw them and ear coins. :]
