Description Original Character #1
Date of Creation: 1998
Explanation: This, my good friends, was my very first original character, back in the day when FF7 was just released, AOL was the primary method of internetting, and fan characters ran amok. Her name is...brace for epic fail...Aerith Gainsborough. Note, AeriTH, not AeriS. This is Aeris' twin sister whose birth cannot be explained in canon, who has a long, complicated, convoluted reason as to why and how she joined SOLDIER.
What NOT to follow: Your favorite character, no matter what your brain may tell you, does not have long lost relatives. If they did, the game would have covered it. The game also would have mentioned other characters that have been effected by the same life-changing event as the main characters; i.e. just because the cool kids have Mako eyes doesn't mean you can too.

Original Character #2
Date of Creation: 1999
Explanation: For every OC created on the side of good, there has to be one for evil. A friend of mine created Tempest Leonhart, Squall's long lost brother who ran away because Laguna and Raine loved Squall much more than him. Yeeeaaahhhh. Well, Tempest needed a sidekick, so in comes Amber Fyreknight and her ridiculously complicated hair and clothes. At 14, she carries two pistols and aims them perfectly, even from distances that a sniper with a Dragunov would have trouble with. She also has a huge attraction to Tempest, despite his being much older than her and completely uninterested in her advances.
What NOT to follow: For starters, replacing the letter I with a Y in your name does not make you cool, it make it looks like hooked on phonics didn't work for you. Second, if your character is going to be running into battle, why would she wear a midriff exposing shirt? Third, there is no way possible for you to make every shot hit, god-moding is bad. And finally, make sure your age fits. A 14 year old slut is rather gross.

Original Character #3
Date of Creation: Somewhere between 1999 and 2001
Explanation: FF8 had been out for a while, and I'd established that Seifer was my favorite character. However, at this time, I wasn't one of the girls that was willing to play boy characters, so I had to make a female version. I'd learned from Aerith that long lost siblings was fail, but what about a daughter? Seifer is pretty pimp, he's probably knocked some bitches up. Enter Nariah Almasy. How she got to the present is even more convoluted than how Aerith joined SOLDIER, and where she found clothes in a female replica of Daddy's is beyond anyone, but she and her pointy Gunblade are damn hot.
What NOT to follow: Similar to having long-lost siblings, your favorite character's descendants are not at your discretion to create. What this is typically called is a gender-switch character...or of recent trends, a Sexy-No-Jutsu character. And for god's sake, at least if you do create a child, remember that it takes two halves to make a whole, they will not be exact replicas of one parent. Also, look at all that hair! How does she fight without it getting grabbed and used against her? Aside from that fact that she's supposed to be able to fight, to swing that Gunblade around...anorexia is not conducive to strength for fighting. Your character doesn't need to be a fatass, but her and Amber both look like they haven't eaten since they were originally created.

Original Character #4
Date of Creation: December 2006
Explanation: After watching Gunslinger Girl, I wanted to make a GSG of my own. This led to the creation of Lauretta Kohler. Complete with functional looking clothing and a rather good RPer for her fratello, Lauretta is the only character to date that I play.
What NOT to follow: Remember that a 12-year-old will be radically different than the 16-26-year-old characters you typically play, so be prepared to handle this switch. Also remember that this is GUNslinger Girl, you will not be using your ninja throwing stars, you will have to use bullets and dodge them as well. Also, the plot of GSG is very sad...but don't overdo it. I'm amazed even Henrietta has such a terrible story, its pretty over the top.

What to Follow: Variety is the spice of life. Notice that they all have different heights, different hair and eye colors, different clothing, and no matter how stupid and non-canon their story, they all have different backgrounds. Having three characters that are all 5'8", wear black, have black hair and red eyes, and all had their parents die in a terrible Chernobyl-esque accident that gave them superpowers...well, that's really boring.

I hope this helps the fledgling RPers out there, and inspires you to make your own, not-sucky characters.

I remember when I designed Fan-Characters this bad for the Sonic series. Those were Dark Times.

I now have improved on mine, but those old ones of mine were good steps to remember what Not To Do.
