Description
If any other game besides ULTRAMAN: towards the future had been placed in our then-rented Super NES, maybe I wouldn't have lobbied so heavily for a Genesis. Of course, my brother rented Super Adventure Island, which admittedly had awesome music and solid gameplay, but between my poor selection and the intrigue of Sonic's speed, we went with a Genesis. Do I regret that decision? Nope; the 16-bit era was awesome whichever camp you belonged to. Also, if I'd been the type of gamer then that I am now, I'd have forgone the pair of them and thrown my folks a left hook by asking for a TurboGrafx.Anyway, the design here was ultimately inspired by Gudis, the first monster encountered by Ultraman in the Australian/Japanese co-production Towards the Future and the first opponent in the aforementioned SNES game. Frankly, I thought he was a lame character until a few years later when I picked up an issue of an Ultraman comic, which portrayed the B-Movie reject as a great nemesis, able to bring Shido to almost the breaking point. Maybe he's that way in the series, I don't know; I never actually knew the series existed (apart from the Japanese original) and the game, comic, and toys were my only real exposure to the property until years later. Besides, I already had Power Rangers to get my giant robot/monster fix from at the time.
I was really impatient with this one, as probably evidenced by the eyes. I didn't wait for the brown to dry completely before applying the purple to the eyes, so I had to make due. It's kind of the same situation with the inking, which is weird because Herbi-Vore Open/Closed were inked after the paint was applied (if memory serves), so I don't know why I had such a hard time with it now. Even if the ink was applied first, that would have been tricky because the ink would run if my brush went too close to the lines. Well, I felt out of practice with my watercolors (and it shows), but I was glad to bring them out again and start painting in some line work.
TwitPic image of the wafers: [link] I think I should have gone with red for the circuitry instead of blue. The only reason I picked it was because I hadn't used it in some time.
