This year's latest piece. I hope all is well with each one of you. Days go by so quickly .. somehow i needed to find time to work on a new painting... just to get away from it all.Technical : Original image : 8887 x 5000 px | lighting was tricky .. there are still so many things that need tweaking .. but then again .. that's never ending. Had to stop somewhere.
using the main reference image proved to be challenging too .. since it was in low resolution, pretty hard to determine sharp lines, details etc. Displace filter was used for the reflection. Pen tool for shape blocking. Smudge tool for final clean up ( PAINFUL but worth it )

I'm really with you on that .. all of us are going through something or the other .. daily! .. it's too damn overwhelming. Time is so important .. somehow some way ... we need to try and make the best of it.
Currently there's so much going on ... feel like caving in.
That's why i needed to do this .. to keep my mind at ease.
I'm slowly starting with the next piece. It's gonna be massive. I hope i'll nail it.

It looks awesome, and very realistic - though it's still visible that this is an artistic creation (in a very good sense) 
Actually - I like the zoomed-out version more than the zoomed in, but that's just my preference. I think you chose a good composition in both versions.
I dont't know - somehow I can "sink into" the zoomed out version better, it has a very calm and "feeling-well" sense to me, though the body posture can be seen in various ways (like she's not feeling well or maybe hurt vs. she's comfortably curled up). Whilst the version here is more... um... maybe ornamental? It's hard to describe...

You know what ... there are few of my friends who weren't so keen about the empty space. And then there was one .. who liked it a lot!
The space was deliberate ... mainly because she's in deep loneliness .... and that was the feeling that had to be elevated but also, to keep her in focus ...
On the other hand ... when you zoom in .. all you see is her .. and you immediately forget about the ocean .. at some point .. it may even seem as if she's floating...
As i was going through so many reference photos ... there were some amazing postures ... some, with the face in view ... but this one image in particular where the face was hidden .. caught my attention.
In reality ... we are at times attracted to people who don't reveal themselves too much... their true emotions are well hidden making them all the more mysterious.
In this world, where we try so hard to fit in ... we tend to forget ourselves ... but just imagine if one person comes along and helps us realize how special we are .... i think that's something to be thankful for.

Yes - depending on society and yourself, but I think there often is pressure. I think that's especially true when you are younger and "trying to find yourself" in puberty, yet I also know of various people of every age that often struggle to "fit in" - or found their "place", yet that sometimes changes, too. Or people change and it doesn't fit them anymore. And I think what you say is somewhat true, being thankful for someone who just says "You are wonderful and special as you are" - that's a great thing

Relating to what you said ... absolutely true.
There was a time when i was so shy .. i would always be in my room, mama would call me out to say hello to our guests / relatives. It was really awkward. Fast forward to present day .. i'm still a little bit like that .. but in a peculiar way; i however do talk to people, so much so that they ask me whether i speak freely to everyone else as i speak to them. And i'm like ... only to those i'm quite comfortable with. But deep down ... i find it overwhelming in a crowded place. Even at a restaurant ... i prefer sitting in a corner; at a cinema house .. few seats away from people. At times ..extreme end of the row. Even in a bus while travelling long distance .. i prefer the back seat.
THey say .. you end up losing yourself in the crowd.

I know some of that, too - not as much as you describe it, but e.g. I don't like to be at partys with too many people. It just feels "too crowded", and I often want to get away again quite quickly.
Yet, even though you have that "shyness" - see where you are, here on DeviantArt, and seemingly not drowning within a huge crowd of artists
Hm, I think I know that saying, too. I guess it's right in a way, yet - I think as an artist, one always stands out of the "large crowd" a little bit, either well-visible or in other ways.

Just an incredible picture, I like the colors and the pose of the little mermaid, but still my heart is not sure about the emotion, on one side I think she feels comfortable in the warm water near the surface and the sun. On the other hand it makes me kinda feel sad, don't know why.
But thats great! Keep up the good work.

i always wonder about how people feel when they see something that connect to them on various levels.
yes ... this piece is about being alone; and we can relate to that .... imagine being in a new city .. away from family .. friends ... many people around us and yet ... we feel small, we hide our emotions.
As for making her mermaid .... "uniqueness" being different yet special .... being beautiful but waiting to be discovered.

PJ-Penguin : I usually start off blocking in all the elements using the pen tool, then using a hard or soft brush with varying opacity levels i proceed with shading. Then i add all the extra elements to try and bring the whole piece together followed by color adjustments . .fix ups .. adding effects like blur, highlights .. sometimes film grain. ( however in this piece .. i decided to skip it )
Hermi-Wermi : ( cute name ^___^ ) I'm really happy how you felt about this piece. The next one is in the works. It will most certainly be better than this.
sjohnston922 : I'm glad you liked the space .. even though i thought it was risky ... i still went with it. I guess in some way ... it was crucial .. just to amplify her loneliness and yet make her special by leaving her in the center of it all.
