Description
"On 18th July 1950, in an act of publicity, the Southern Region of British Railways wanted to show the other regions their smaller engines could still meet up to the challenge and match the might of larger Pacifics and 4-6-0s of those other regions. Eastleigh-based V 'Schools' 4-4-0 No. 30941 'Barnier' renowned at this point due to being in BR Express Blue, was selected for this run as they felt a small streak of blue was enough to catch the press' attention. The run was made with seven coaches including a former NER dynamometer car from the Eastern Region, from London Waterloo to Bournemouth with driver Samuel Harris and fireman William Harrick on the footplate. Between Winchester and Southampton, the equipment in the loaned carriage recorded the 1935-built 'Schools' class at speeds which were thought impossible for the class, reaching a speed of 95mph. Just north of Eastleigh, No. 30941 'Barnier' broke 100mph and by when racing through the station, a maximum speed of 103mph was achieved, setting a record for the SR V class 4-4-0s which still stands to this day."Sprites: BaconOverlord582 , Champ2stay , The-Station-Pilot , Myself
