Description Two examples of TR's special orders built overseas for their Scotch Gauge network, the Rogers brothers No. 139 'Strand' and No. 140 'Halsey'.

With the remaining former Nerland Continent Railway (NCR) locomotives replaced by TR's own 100 class 2-4-0s, there was still a need for a more powerful locomotive on mixed-traffic duties and goods trains the 100s couldn't handle without double-heading. In response and due to a locomotive builder strike on Mainland Britain, TR placed an unique order from Rogers Locomotive Works in New Jersey, USA for a mogul adapted from one designed by the Baldwin Locomotive Works for operation on 4ft 6in "Scotch" gauge track as opposed to Standard Gauge, labelled the "TR 139 class". The result was two moguls delivered in 1901 known as "Strand" (No. 139) and "Halsey" (No. 140). As expected, they handled mixed duties that the TR 100 class 2-4-0s couldn't handle alone and were the most powerful locomotives on that part of the network until the arrival of TR's only Garratt in 1921 and the two members of the TR 200 class 2-6-2 "prairies" from Clyde Engineering of Australia in 1935.

In 1972, a decision was made for the two members to carry nameplates as to help with identifying them better but this was made further in 1975 when No. 140 'Halsey' was rebuilt by TR's main Scotch Gauge workshops at Norton (capable of building locomotives but primarily a back up when Ashton Works is busy with Standard Gauge repairs or overhauls. Norton built all 35 members of the TR 100 class between 1899-1903) with Walschaerts Valve Gear and repainted dark blue with white lining, the previous resulting a new cylinder block being casted and the new livery making Halsey one of a few TR steam locomotives to carry the modern TR logo from the 1960s first used on passenger stock painted corporate blue. As of 2023, the two are operational and used heavily as being the only American locomotives on the TR Scotch Gauge system.
