Where the Guardian class is a -- lacking of a better term -- disarmed Federation class dreadnought.

To work with the timeline, even after the armistice with the Klingons, the Federation began to develop the Federation class dreadnought in case another war with the Klingons. But in, "Errand of Mercy," the Organians imposed a peace treaty between the Federation and the Klingons. And one stipulation, disarm the dreadnoughts.

So rather than dismantling the dreadnoughts and abandoning the ships under construction, they redesigned them to be exploration ships.

The parts are also found on the previous post, and which ones are used for the Guardian class.

The name, Guardian class, was from a comment on the previous post for the dreadnought, but made it into the disarmed dreadnought as he and I both agree the USS Nichols, named after the late Nichelle Nichols, isn't suitable for a dreadnought.

Effectively, the number of phaser banks on the saucer has been reduced from 20 down to 8, but with 2 added defensive phasers on engineering hull.

The antiproton cannons on either side of the engineering hull were replaced with heavy sensor arrays, mostly used as telescopes.

The photon torpedo launchers remained, but the number of photon torpedoes were reduced, and 2 of the antimatter pods were removed. The now former antimatter hatches are refitted as general airlocks.

The tertiary nacelle was removed, but the warp power conduit remained, and redesigned with an impulse deflection crystal to channel warp power to the impulse drive.

The saucer shuttle bays were converted into hydroponics and recreation facilities.

The lower, upside down shuttle bay use to run the full length, now only half length. The forward half was rebuilt to have science labs, and added hydroponics.

I just realized I forgot to add a docking system when the ship was moored at a Starbase or drydock.

Oh well.

With the added space, there are bioreactors that both recycles oxygen with algae, kelp and seaweed, with all of them generating biomass for the food synthesizers.

The ramscoops on the 2 remaining nacelles don't have the Ion Beam Emitter (IBE), and became the precursor to the FWG-1 warp drive for the Enterprise (Constitution 2) class and Miranda class. Where they collect deuterium and helium-3 from stars and ion winds that doesn't need the IBE, which reduces engine power requirements by 3% at warp speeds.

The magnetic collector still doubles as a magnetic shield.

The space-energy/matter sink (acquisition) are the ramscoop intake vents, and the magnatomic flux constriction - first stage is the magnetic field cooling grille. The IBE made a resurgence with the Enterprise-B with both improved engine efficiency and better ramscoop technology.

The added space gets the crew out of the corridors and into barracks like on the Enterprise.

One thing I keep forgetting to mention, the dreadnought has only maybe 1/4 the travel range of a Constitution class starship.

For the Diane Carey novel, Dreadnought, with some reconfiguration, it can be the Star Empire that was to be the weapon of war for Vaughn Rittenhouse was scheduled for decommissioning, but was "reassigned." Though not canon, still trying to make it work with this ship.
