Clarke's third law states: 'Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic'
Arthur C. Clarke, "Profiles of The Future", 1961 English physicist & science fiction author (1917 - )

This law of Sci Fi became well known after Clarks rise to fame following the success of 2001, and it was probably one of the most influential ideas behind the blending of high fantacy with 'hard' science fiction in the 1970s and beyond. It became common practice to gloss over the plausability of futuistic technolgy because Clark's law gave everyone a licence to say 'its beyond contemporary (Human) understanding'. Cultural relativism is taken for granted today, but in the 'serious' SF world up to the 1950's it was unthinkable. The whole idea of SF was to explore the possibilties hinted at by real scientific research.

So yes... under Clarks law you can have 'real' dragons. But Jurasic Park demonstrated like no other film, why it was not a good idea to do something like that just because we can.

So I put the question: If entertainment was not a good enough reason to bring 'dragons' to life, what would be? Why would you create something so terrible and dangerious? The answer to me is medicine.

Create a dragon on 'our side'; a dragon capable of hunting down and destroying cancer cells within a living human; a dragon too small to get out of hand.

A published work is beyond the control of an artist and I think it is stupid to try. People are free to interpret this image as they please, and there is nothing the artist or anyone else can do to stop this from happening.

BTW turn the sucker 'tail up', and check out the movement! Wow!

I regard this image as still in progress.

the detail is amazing. All of your drawings are amazing. How long does it take to draw these things?

Heh. The funny thing about micro-organisms is that with the right numbers, they can decimate entire populations. Such is life.

All of your drawings are so fascinating. The level of detail and the thought behind them. Wonderful job.

I'm faving this ^_^.

A very VERY good point.

That is why these little buggers have no sex organs and are engineered to die of old age BEFORE their natural ancestors reached sexual maturity That way if there ever was a genetic regression, the individuals involved would have no chance to take advantage of it.

The roll of artists has changed thoughout the ages. There was a time when it was normal for people to conceive things in their head because they needed customer approval for their projects and materials were too valuable to mess about with. Today many artists are expected to come up with the unexpected. Both ways have advantages and disadvantages.

, yes, drawings always have a way of becoming what _they_ want. or maybe it's just unexperienced me.

Wow, this is fantastic! Arthur C. Clarke is one of my favorite authors. I like the description that you wrote . It really adds to picture. I love the detail you have put into this piece, and how it looks like the body is flowing towards the tail... Great work. I love it

Most excellent- i fancy that you have something in common with Kandinsky in that you seem to draw these great abstract shapes from the 'soul' as it were. Superb description too, tho i do think i prefer it as a standalone piece of surreal art that leaves the viewer to decide what it actually is. To me it looks like something that is massive, an instrument of some robotic, ancient and cylopean gods. But thats just me - great work friend

newepoch In reply to gavoid [2005-05-30 00:57:41 +0000 UTC]

Well you could say I am a child of Kandinski. My father was very influenced by him and he taught me. Kandiski, Klee, Mondrian... I have a lot of time for the constructivists in general, because they were not affraid of ideas and believed that artists could play a role in society as vital as scientists.

Central to my training was Mondian's concept of 'taking a line for a walk'.

As for the soul of shapes... you are very right... It took me a long time to realise that the shapes had to be let loose on the paper and given their head.

I completely agree with your comment about my 'description'. A published work is beyond the control of an artist and I think it is stupid to try. People are free to interpret the image as they please, and there is nothing the artist or anyone else can do to stop that happening.

BTW turn the sucker 'tail up', and check out the movement! Wow!

and I guess they'd mess up your digestive system, wouldn't they?

By the way "too small to get out of hand" - I'd say that the smaller it is, the more dangerous it becomes if it get out of hand. But then... I guess in the danger department, size doesn't matter *g*

wonderful dtails. How big is the original?

newepoch In reply to verte-5 [2006-01-13 05:20:49 +0000 UTC]

No, your stomech acid and digestive ensigms would destroy them very quickly.

You are right about small not being weak. But these dragons are both sterile and short lived so I don't think they would be a problem.

The original was drawn on an A3 sheet of paper.

Its easy to be a good engineer on paper... especially when you get great feedback like your own. If only such a useful creature was as easy to make for real.

I always try to give constructive feedback, I'm happy when it's appreciated : )

Yes well, we'll have to wait another few decades, maybe less... It will probably not look this way, though.

You know, when browsing through your gallery, I noticed the way how some comments become little conversations about the pieces. And I never knew how to define "art", but now I think it may be something that stimulates other's imagination as well and brings about communicaton, and your art does that.
Or maybe I was just getting philosophical ; )

I never lie about art Your work is very beauitful, and reproduces on the screen very well. It looks great as a thumbnail which is very important for selling artwork on the web. I think you could sell your work on ebay, but it would take a lot of time an effort to get started. The trouble is your work is very detailed and I guess takes a long time to do.

Being an artist on ebay is all about the work, not the artist. Which I think is a good thing. You have to make at least 100 sales on ebay before customers start to trust you, and that takes at least a year if you are lucky. But it is well worth it because you CAN earn a living from your art on ebay.

I will check out your scraps and get back to you
