Description [mur-der]
–noun
1.
Law . the killing of another human being under conditions specifically covered in law. In the U.S., special statutory definitions include murder committed with malice aforethought, characterized by deliberation or premeditation or occurring during the commission of another serious crime, as robbery or arson (first-degree murder), and murder by intent but without deliberation or premeditation (second-degree murder).

This may seem like a small thing, but it isn’t. Using the word murder to classify the unlawful killing of animals is just another way to blur the crucial distinction between us and animals. Animals can be abused, but killing them isn't murder.

I don't understand people. "Murder" is for people. It's not to be "worse". The unjust and cruel killing of anything is, well, unjust and cruel. Murder is used in law, with people.

Saying you "killed" an animal however is not to water it down versus murder. It's just proper use of the term that would be used in that case. If you have morals, regardless of the word used, you'll be disgusted at animal abuse.

Yep. Not murder. I've never heard anyone use that argument for being a vegetarian myself, but I can see where someone might. Personally, my only rule is that whatever I'm eating can't look back at me while I'm eating it (i.e.: crabs, lobsters) because it looks like it's looking at me going "Hey, that's my arm you just ate, what the hell did I ever do to you?!"

Which is true. That's why brutal (and I mean actual brutal) killing of animals is considered abuse. Like, if you douse a dog with gasoline and light the poor thing on fire; effectively killing it. That's considered animal abuse.

Animals are living creatures just like the rest of us. They have lives, feelings, souls, and thoughts like the rest of us. So if killing one of us is murder, killing one of them is murder. God made us all equally, after all.

And before the flames and spam come rolling in, there's my opinion and that's all I'm saying.

First, how do you know humans understand more?

Second, if they do, do you measure humans by the same standard? Is it more okay to kill a mentally retarded person than a genius-level person? After all, a mentally retarded person doesn't have as much understanding.

Do you evaluate worthiness of life by intelligence?

Well, that's because humans are the dominant species, so of course we're more intelligent than other species. But that doesn't mean we're the only things that can be referred to as "murdered" when someone kills us.

Animals have their own ways of thinking and intelligence, but they speak different languages and... well, they're just different creatures!

but surely that contradicts your previous comment... "God made us all equally, after all." Now, I'll be the first to proudly say that i don't believe in God, but if he did make us equal, why are we the "dominant species" and are "more intelligent than other species"? Surely if we are equal, they would be as intelligent as us?

PS I do respect your opinion and beliefs, but you did sort of shoot yourself n the foot there

kingseye In reply to ??? [2010-12-07 22:17:37 +0000 UTC]

Humans as a species always put themselves one above everything else, which is unfortunate, moreso in this case. You can be literal about the dictionary definition of 'murder', but that doesn't deduct from that fact it's still murder. if you scroll down, it also states,
. to kill or slaughter inhumanly or barbarously
With that in mind, it is entirely possible to murder an animal. It is in the act itself, not the dictionary definition.

(Debate, not argument, should anyone wish to respond)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

princedirk In reply to kingseye [2010-12-08 20:35:42 +0000 UTC]

Killing an animal is not murder.
Killing a human accidentally is not murder.
Killing a human, when you are a human, with malicious intent is murder.
An animal killing a human is not murder.

Killing is not "better" than murder. Murder is not "worse" than killing. Killing an animal is killing an animal and if it was done cruely it is just as bad. But saying it is murder is misuse of the word. Famine is also a "bad" thing. But if you used it synonymously with the killing of an animal people would tell you that's the wrong word.

NewtonianNocturn In reply to kingseye [2010-12-07 22:24:43 +0000 UTC]

I'm more looking towards those who seem to think that an animals life is worth more than a humans. More to the point you can't be sued for murdering an animal. For being cruel, yes, but not for murder.

Also I could murder (kill inhumanely) a plant, no one is going to take me to court for it.

Did you get that definition from dictionary.com?
It seems so.. it would have been good to read the whole entry....
"to kill or slaughter inhumanly or barbarously."

There are many meanings of murder.
Only having the noun version is one-sided. = \

"to murder.."
it is a verb, as well.

Murder- the planned or pre-meditated killing of a human being.
Kill- to take life.

Technically, you can also say you can abuse but not murder a human then (that, and I don't believe it's legal to kill someone's pet without a good reason too). But I get your point! I mean I'm a vegetarian and plan to be vegan in future, but I'd never use the word MURDER when it comes to meat. It's silly, especially because eating meat IS a part of nature, man. I laugh at those people that say it's murder when a human does it for food, but think it's totally not murder when a wolf does it.

What I don't like is killing for entertainment. Especially when it's slow and painful. But that's just me.

animal cruelty is horrible, any person who has,and is abusing an animal should be in jail for a very long time,im a huge animal lover and it breaks my heart that people are cold hearted enough to even abuse an animal and so much as kill it either!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

princedirk In reply to lady5430 [2010-12-08 20:32:53 +0000 UTC]

Animal abuse and animal cruelty ARE bad things. The fact that they aren't murder doesn't make them "good" or "less bad" than murder. It just isn't the definition of MURDER. Famine is bad, too, but is killing an animal famine...?

If you have a heart when you hear someone cruely killed an animal you'llfeel bad. If you have a brain and hear someone murdered an animal you'll tell them they're misusing the word.

They usually refer to an animal who kills one or several humans as a "man-eater" if they kill to eat them, or a "man-killer" if they continue to kill without any reason.

Actually animals do commit murder in cold blood. There have been cases were lions have killed leopards for the sake of killing, not for food. Even bunnies are guilty of trying to kill each other. I adopted a bunny who was all scared from injuries inflicted by another rabbit who was trying to kill him. I just thought it's an interesting topic to bring up.
