In this tutorial I will talk about ways to get more watchers. I will be talking about the good and bad ways to get watchers, and why your watcher count is not nearly as important as you think. Hope it helps!
I will first talk about the don'ts (red/pink) and then the do's (green). Questionable ways to get watchers are inlcuded inbetween (yellow)
ASKING PEOPLE TO WATCH YOU
Please, don't do this.
From time to time I see deviations with descriptions saying things like "~and plase watch me~~" or people commenting on other's profiles, asking them to watch them. Please don't do this. It is not only rude to go and beg people for a watch, but most of the time it is also written in a aggresive manner. Things like 'why did u stop watching me' or something like that isn't necesarry.
People decide for themselves who they watch, and it shouldn't be obligated. Some people like to keep the total of people they watch small so they can favourite and comment on every deviation. That someone doesn't watches you doesn't mean they do hate your art, really. Don't push people to watch you please.
Llamas
Please, don't.
Nowadays it is really popular to spam people with llamas. You know, llamas, the little badges you can't do anything with. Although I love the idea of giving llama badges to good artists, a lot of people use them to get noticed. For example, if you receive such a badge you will probably check out that person's profile. If they give a lot of badges to a lot of people they will get more pageviews, and eventually more watchers.
This isn't a good way to get more watchers. Not only are you just randomly giving out badges and not looking at people their art, it is also pretty irritating to get llamas all the time. Some people told me they really got spammed with them, and it is annoying to think you got an important message and instead open it to see you only gotten an useless llama. Please don't do this.
FAVING
You could do this if you want?
Like faving people their art to get their attention really isn't that bad. It is a way of getting noticed, and nobody really minds getting favorites, right?
I think there is only one downside to this. Please, if you go fave everyones art, atleast take the effort to look at it. A lot of people out there just open up newest, favourite a lot of drawings, and don't even look at the drawing. I think this is really rude, and you should only favorite the art if you like it (or want someone to feel good about it). Don't just randomly favourite things.
What you could do however, is find people that are interested in the same things as you are? For example, I myself favourite and comment on lot of yaoi fanart, which sometimes get me watchers or messages of people who are also interested in this, and sometimes even want to arttrade or something. Don't only favourite things to get attention.
DAHUB
Yes and no?
For the ones not knowing what dAhub is, it is a profile on which you can pay points for watchers, favs and llamas. You can also earn points for watching and faving things from others.
I tried to get more watchers in the beginning with dAhub, and I am not saying that you won't get more watchers with dAhub. You can get like tons of watchers there! But do mind one thing.
The watchers you get from there are only people who do it for the points and not because they like your art. Big change they won't be commenting or faving any of your works or even look at it. It will cost you points to get them, but big change those watchers unwatch you after they got their points. This really isn't a good way to get watchers, and it may get your watcher count up, but don't think you will get more comments or favs in this way.
I am not saying the system behind dAhub is bad, but I am just saying you shouldn't spend all your money on getting watchers from there. What I do like about dAhub is the favorites. I personally use it to boost the favorites on my commission journal for it to be in 'What's Hot' so more people will notice it! :> (A guide about commissions is coming soon! )
HOSTING EVENTS
Absolutely!
So how I got a lot of watchers was by hosting events. With events I mean community things on dA, like contest, kiribans and raffles. In this way your profile gets viewed more often, and you will get more watchers this way.
Raffles are the best event to gain watchers with. Host a raffle, and if the people who enter want an extra ticket to win, simply say they can get it by watching you. Or maybe they are only allowed to join if they watch you? Giving them an option is better in my opinion, don't make watching you an obligation.
Contest get spread really easily among groups and people. For example, if I make a contest entry, other people will maybe check out the contest as well along with your profile. Again, the same applies as the raffle. You can make it a contest for only watchers, or make it a rule that they have to share the journal in a journal of their own.
But remember, don't overwork yourself with hosting things. Don't promise things that you now are too much for you, and make sure the raffle prize could be done in about a week. Keep the events fun for other's, but most importantly, for yourself. Be careful please
GET HELP FROM A FRIEND!
Yes!
Sometimes getting noticed is hard, and asking a friend for help isn't that bad of an idea.
For example, I think a lot of my friends deserve way more watchers than they actually have. You could ask a friend with more watchers if they could help you out by making a journal about them or something, saying that they should watch you.
So for example, I want to help out my friend MelloFloyd , who in my opinion deserves more watchers. I could make a journal with something like this.
"Hiya guys! Check out this neato mate of mine named MelloFloyd ! Definitely worth a watch! <3 "
In return, they could make such a journal for mine, and we could help each other out to get more watchers by advertising for each other!
(But in all seriousness, go check them out. They are neato!)
BE KIND AND SOCIALIZE!
What? Who would have thought that being kind would get you somewhere?
In all seriousness, not a joke. Just be kind to people in the community. Sounds pretty simple right?
I am not saying that you should just be fake kind to everyone. You don't have to go out and compliment every artist you see. I am just saying that you should be kind to people in this community. Don't answer with only 'ok', but maybe talk to someone on here? Talk to someone, make some friends! A big part of watchers are mostly friends, and if you're kind to people they are more likely to watch you back! Be kind and people tend to be more kind to you, it is that easy
MAKE GOOD ART
I am completely aware that this one may sound a bit cliché, but still. If you want a lot of watchers you shouldn't focus too much on your watcher total. Just let it go, make some art, and the better the art gets the more watchers you get! Don't be insulted if someone isn't your watcher anymore. Go make art, show them what they are missing!
The people on here with the most watchers make the most stunning artworks, and if you want to have as much watchers as they you should practice and practice. I believe in you, you can reach the same level if you keep practicing! Art is not a talent, it is a skill (see How To - Improve Your Drawing)
END WORD
Please don't focus too much on your watcher total. One watcher that favorites and comments and just is kind to you is worth way more than 100 watchers that do nothing. Really, your watcher total isn't as important as you think. Just remember to not worry about it too much, okay? <3
Keep drawing and writing and whatever, and the watchers will come eventually. Just enjoy what you do!
Have a very lovely and llama-spam-free day!

This is awesome! So true!
But aren't contests the same as paying for watchers? You gotta have a handful of points for people to watch :T

Nexubis In reply to TheDrawingDino123 [2017-05-29 09:56:28 +0000 UTC]
Glad I could help!
Oh no they aren't! A lot of prizes of a contest are most of the time just art, you don't have to put money in it. For raffles the same. And you can make it more of an option, I get that you compare it but it really isn't the same :3

X3
Yeah right! And are raffles something like answering a question and picking a random contestant? Still kinda confused

Nexubis In reply to TheDrawingDino123 [2017-05-29 19:07:34 +0000 UTC]
A raffle is kind of like a lottery, and people can earn tickets by doing things like just being a watcher or commenting a funny joke, it could be anything! You don't have to enter with a drawing or pay for it

Exactly, like a good friend is worth way more than 100 watchers who don't say a thing. Glad to hear their comments make you happy, have a lovely day! :33
