It's interesting to practice different ways of going about painting. tried something new with this reference. its abit easier to scale proportions. and choosing colors that fit a specific tone. For this one; i painted the dark tones with a normal skin color. i worked my way outwards from that, going towards the darker spectrum first, heading more towards red from yellow as it got darker and more saturated. once i feel ive reached the darkest, most comfortable shade value, i add highlights, going to the brightest tone i need, and blending it on the figure. lowering the value in certain areas to emphasize other areas. after this point i adjust the painting by solidifying shapes and blends. now i go into color balance and add a bit of red to the midtone, a bit of cyan to the shadows, and a bit of yellow to the highlights. this intensified the color contrast. last but not least i use a hard light layer with highly saturated colors to emphasize light effects on the more appealing features, in my opinion the eyes and mouth.
