Description
Wanted to show how I paint kinda @U@;; I'll try to be as clear as possible...First of all: I am definitely not professional. This is just how I "paint."
TL;DR ahead
Tools:
SAI; Ink pen (lineart + base color), Marker (shading)
I USE A LOT OF LAYERS. I flatten them a lot too. That is why my use of the marker tool is uh "controlled"
1. Lineart. I draw out what I want to paint... I don't really do lineart for it so it's basically my sketching lmao ; u ; That's why the hair area looks messy... I erased the appropriate areas DURING painting so sorry I didn't screenshot the basic sketch.
2. Base Colors. Mostly base colors. I completely deleted the hair outline to give a softer look. Sorry for the shading (shorts etc), I just brushed over the areas with the marker tool and flattened the layer on the base.
3. I shade... I actually do random colors. OTL That's not a really good idea but it seems to work decently for me. I just try to see if the colors look good LMAO ... I tend to mix in a lot of blues, oranges, and purples.
4->5. Smoothed some things out and yuh. You can see how I add most of my highlights (eyes, hair) here. I add a new layer and stroke over areas with the base color (look at the sleeves... see how it's kinda blobby white on top of the shading?) that's how I like to show form.
6. Finished product...
Sorry I ramble/it looks confusing. :C I'll do my best to answer questions in the comments if anyone has any <3... Will scrap later.
Time taken: 40 minutes
Tool: SAI
EDIT!! *Extra: sorry something important. I use the Layer clip/ Clipping Group option a lot. Note: That is why my shading is within the base color and clean.
Above your layer box you see check boxes:
[ ] Preserve Opacity
[ ] Clipping Group
( ) Selection Source
To use Layer Clip first you have a base.
Layer 1 - Base Color
Then you want to shade? Make a new layer OVER the Base. Not below.
Layer 2 - Shade
Layer 1 - Base Color
Select Layer 2. Check the Clipping Group Box.
[ ] Preserve Opacity
[x] Clipping Group
( ) Selection Source
---Layer 2 - Shade
Layer 1 - Base Color
You can do that for multiple layers and STILL edit the Base Color (which you can do with slightly more difficulty with Preserve Opacity/Opacity Lock)
EX.
---Layer 4 - Highlight etc
---Layer 3 - More shade
---Layer 2 - Shade
Layer 1 - Base Color
If you have any questions please don't be afraid to comment. But this is pretty much the best way I can explain this. If you have SAI please experiment for yourself! I save a lot of time this way. You can do this with later versions of Photoshop too (Right Click layer -> Clipping Mask) Have funnnn

Oh my goodness, I could hug you for pointing out the existence of the Clipping Group feature! I've been using SAI for some time now, but I've never known about this, oops. Shading will be even easier now!
Thank you!

Hey can I ask, I know how to use SAI and all, but I've never understood what the setting the layer to 'multiply' or something like that does? Could you tell me? Since I saw it in your other tutorial, and I wasn't quite sure with it does. Thank you! O u O

KINDA HARD TO EXPLAIN. But it like adjusts w/e color to match the one below. like, on the clothes for the other tutorial-- you see how I used purple? it changed to a shade of red and stuff when I used multiply. White is see-through on the multiply layer, so pencil people like to use it to digitally color their lineart for example C:
Hope that explains it /o/

I'm a completely n00b, photoshop intrigues me and bothers me at the same time.
I am aware of how you paint, but I don't get how to use this "layer"-option. What is the purpose of the layer? How do I use it? And what is SAI Arg, I need to ask!
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
niaro In reply to MadamFeather [2010-08-14 21:39:59 +0000 UTC]
Easy Paint Tool SAI is a $50 program from Japan that fans had translated into English quite well. A lot of deviants use it now because it's smooth and made specifically for drawing. Also it's small. You can get a free trial at [link]
Layers are so you don't affect the rest of your drawing. For example, first layer you wanna draw a bunny. Make a new layer and draw a dog. If you don't want the bunny anymore, just erase it on the first layer and your dog'll be untouched.
I'm really bad at explaining basic things but I'd suggest looking on basic tuts here if you're new to digital art (:

Thank you!
I'm like a damsel in distress with digital art, and I'm glad your answer wasn't ...mocking. (sorry, I guess I was a little afraid asking ) I feel ambarrased sometimes, asking questions about things I suspect everyone to know, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who's in trouble!
Anyway, thank you again for your answers! I'll get going trying with the layers, I think I get the idea about it now. And I've found some basic tuts now, too.
You've been a great help!

Oh wow, I didn't know we can use clipping mask, I didn't even have any idea of what it could do.
Anyway, do you merge the layer (example: hair, hair shade, hair highlight) together before starting coloring the other parts [skin, clothes, etc] or just leave them while coloring the other parts?
And the highlight thing is very helpful, I'm kinda new to SAI so yeah...

niaro In reply to guchay [2010-08-13 11:01:53 +0000 UTC]
Yeah I pretty much leave them alone :'D I always end up with 70 or so layers LMAO But if you wanna use the marker tool, it blends with the existing colors on the layer. So what I do is flatten the layer whenever I wanna introduce a new shade/color and just keep painting hurp. There's probably an easier way, but this way works fine for an artist who is nervous painting on a single layer like me!

I wanna ask something. do you use different layer for every part of colors you shade? I mean, you use different layers for the ribbon shading and the kimono shading. do you do that?
