Description
This is a book cover I illustrated for Mary Shelley's famous horror sotry of Frankenstein. It was a collaboration between me and a friend who did the graphic Design magic on the piece for the final product -hopefully I am gonna have a picture soon- and another firend who had the patience to pose for us. I want to thank both Tim and Vijay for this project.I am trying a new approach in watercolor with this work. I didnt use ink as usual by rather kept the pencil marks of the drawing and applied watercolor on top. Hope you like it! I was one of my submissions for SCAD's advertising awards.
The concept of the cover came to me during the actual photoshoot. I wanted to depict the monster as a vulnerable and misunderstood creature that has a strange air of alienation from humanity yet it is still human. I kept the color cool to emphasize the fact that the body is dead yet the subject is very much alive. I got a lot of comments that this is a "sexy" version of the monster....well if you agree...blame it on the model! lol

Despite the style, colouring and shading, I have to admit, the pose does make him look like he's attempting to be sexy which is actually a good thing for the piece. It shows the creature in a very human light like you intended while still showing that's it's a creature. I mean, I feel like he's looking at me and about to wink at me while saying 'hello there'. It's like it's giving two messages at once. The first message is that being beautiful is not about fitting into society's norms of what 'beautiful' is, but accepting even the worst of your imperfections and not letting it stop you. The second message is that the most beautiful feature a person can have is confidence because if you have that, you will never have qualms about revealing yourself to the world.
