You're completely spot on that the skull is replaced with something there, but I won't tell you more besides that. Now, hear me here (I'm not an asshole, I swear! 
You're a prime example of how this did work, you interpreted the skeleton as a representation of death (Which I have not hinted anywhere) and the skull as carbon fiber. And that's super cool! You're absolutely welcome to give it your own meaning too. The one about the mosh pit is my favorite!
