In Greek mythology, Andromeda was a young girl whose mother had upset the god of the sea, Poseidon. In revenge, Poseidon sent a sea monster to destroy their country; to calm this moster, Andromeda was chained to a rock as a sacrifice, only to be saved by Perseus.
