makes me think that he's playing it for the first time since he grew up, he's playing saria's song to see if she's still ok, waits for a moment, hears nothing, then suddenly hears her whispering his name in the wind...
or...
given the wind blowing into his face, perhaps while playing the song of time, the goddess of time, (using her time powers of course) gives occarina link a prophecy of things to come in wind waker, since toon link is also referred to as "the hero of winds"
