Watercolor, watercolor pencil, regular pencil, acrylic, and marker.
A sub-par tribute to my favorite movie ever.

Howl and Sophie belong to Ghibli and a brilliant author.

i love the book so much. and the film as well. but in different ways.

my favourite bit, is where howl coms home drunk from rugby. that, and the rather silly constant nose blowing when he has a cold ^^

This is gorgeous, absolutely gorgeous. And its funny because I read the title, and I may seem a bit...naiive, but I dont know who those people are. Okay so that wasnt the funny part, this is the funny part. My step-family's last name is Jenkins. Just thought that was really ironic. ^^

Was Jenkins really his last name? I know in the movie he goes by Pendragon moreso than Jenkins... And I haven't read the book. Oh well - in any case, WONDERFUL painting; the concept is awesome too XD A walk... AUGH that is just too perfect.

The watercolours are so soft, excellent work.

I also loved that movie, even the dubbed version was good (mostly because of Billy Crystal being Calcifer's voice). Have you read the novel the movie was based on?

Okay, first, watch the movie first, then read the book, I think it should be watched without the prejudice that comes with reading the book first.

alrighty, this is mostly background, the parenthases are comparison facts to keep you straight when/if you see one before the other so, Howl's moving castle is a story based in a land with witches and wizards, but not just special people can learn magic, anyone can. Howl is a wizard who's infamous for stealing girls' hearts and eating them, when he is really, in fact, just a vain 'playa'. Sophie(19) is a girl, cursed by mother's tales at having the worst luck for her future/in setting out on her own becuase she was born eldest. So, her mother (in the movie, it's her stepmother in the book) keeps her at the hat shop, previously owned by her and her sister's father. (she has two sisters in the book, but one in the movie) She gets cursed by the Witch of the Waste (desert in the book, and mountainous marshland in the movie) for mistaken association to Howl. As such, she is now a 90 year-old woman, and decides since her luck can't get any worse, she might as well seek her fortune in the world. You'll have to watch the movie and read to find out the rest.

And I recommend watching the movie subbed.... I hate what Disney is casting for (the majority anyway of) the characters. The book is written by Diana Wynne Jones, and has recently come back into print because of the movie. The sequel for the book is 'Castle in the Air'. Don't raise your hopes too high for it, the main characters are completely different.

I read the book first then watched the movie and its just about totally different so I know where your coming from. After I watched the movie I was quite disappointed with all the minor tweaks. If they kept to the book it would of been wonderful. Seeing how they showed Wales would of been cool and all. Also castle in the air wasn't my favorite book but it was interesting, just wish it dealt more with Howl and all them in stead of hiding them away.

Actually, for most of all Miyazaki's movies, whether they're based on a book or not, Miyazaki takes the story and makes it his own. Different elements of a story can speak out depending on who is handling it. Not to mention that the original dierector dropped the movie in the middle of the project, and Miyazaki came out of retirement for what, the second time? to save the film. The point of movies based on books is not to compare the movie to the book, but to see the movie as its own story. Any story retold be a different author is going to have differences. A director is just another story teller that uses the cinema to convey the story. Miyazaki and Jones are both amazing story tellers that just tell the story in different ways.

As for Castle in the Air. Rarely have I ever seen Diana Wynne Jones write a story that lasted more than a single book with the same main characters (Chronicles of Chrestomanci and The Dark Lord of Derkholm being two exceptions, and even then, the Chrestomanci series is a stretch). And I really don't think that they were "hidden away" as you say they were. They were still key elements in the story, they just weren't the main focus. Sure, I'd like to see a story from Jones that revisits Howl and Sophie and Calicifer, but it doesn't make me any less appreciative of her other work that doesn't directly involve them. You just kinda have to accept that that's how she writes and get over it.

Cateyes27 In reply to ftepainting [2007-12-29 18:05:14 +0000 UTC]

huh wha? I didn't say that the second book was bad, i'm use to her style of writing but I ment they where hidden away as in they were in the story the entire time but that wasn't revealed until the end. I was agreeing with you and you kind of just tried to tell me off >.< plus it was my own opinion I didn't state it as a fact.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ftepainting In reply to Cateyes27 [2007-12-29 18:51:42 +0000 UTC]

I never said you were stating it as fact. I was just adding more of my opinion on the books. And I wasn't in any way trying to tell you off.

In any case, I know my writing can sound a little offensive when I give my opinion, but I'm only telling my side of the story. Plus I was surprised that anyone would comment on what I said over a year and a half ago. Sorry for any confusion.

Cateyes27 In reply to ftepainting [2007-12-29 23:47:23 +0000 UTC]

I didn't really take offense to anything untill the last sentence of, "You just kinda have to accept that that's how she writes and get over it." thats the only part that kind of got to me >< but i first commented on your comment because I was thinking the exact same thing when I first looked at the drawing. Most of the people I talk to don't even know who Diana Wynne Jones is or how wonderful her books are, I'm just glad that someone does ^^

ftepainting In reply to Cateyes27 [2007-12-30 00:41:09 +0000 UTC]

lol, well I wasn't too sure how much of her work you've read, alot of people I know expect continuous stories and plots when they think of sequels. So explaining her work is kinda hard. I don't think I've seen another authors work that does that same sort of thing. It's like she can create a world and BAM! you can get a hundred different stories, just don't expect them all to be about the same person

Y'know what would be cool? A Diana Wynn Jones book club on DA. Every few months or so the club focuses on a different book and the club members are free to do artistic tributes to what they read, and/or discuss the book. *shrug* Sudden brain fart.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Cateyes27 In reply to ftepainting [2007-12-30 13:40:13 +0000 UTC]

That would be cool, because she has so many books out that there could be so many different drawings that could come about. Plus there are many creatures that people could love to draw as well, The Game had quite a few and I loved her characters Fiddle and Flute.

lol. S'okay. I work at a bookstore, so I prefer to own the books I read. My experience with the libraries is that more often than not, the book is damaged in some way so that part of the story is unreadable.

that reminds me of a time when i tried to help a girl find a book and got cussed out because they didn't have it. I even looked in the place where they have their "mature" manga for her and my final reply was, "They don't have it" wow she went off on me like I had a hand in it.
