Description When I first started doing pony vector art, I used a lot of traces just like this, but I've learned a lot since then and wanted to make an improved set. This time, I'm going to be more methodical and try to get the basic pieces so I can make art and such easier in the future. This is the first in that series. The full trace of the 8 frame female pony run cycle.

The file I uploaded is the original Illustrator vector file so you can recolor, re-position or do anything else you want. I want everyone to have it so we can make great pony art together

More will be coming soon.

IMPORTANT EDIT: For those who haven't realized yet, the image you see here is just the JPG preview of the Illustrator file that you can download. If you have Illustrator or a compatible program, you can see the original traces I did and modify each pose. Each one has a separate head, legs, and such so you can custom anything you want!

ALSO: Art style by Lauren Faust, pony poses and such copyright by Hasbro. I didn't realize this would make front page and a lot of people seem not to know that this is a My Little Pony blank.

EDIT AGAIN: Some folks have been animating this. Here's a gif: cybertronian-researcher.tumblr…

EDIT 2015.08.19 - I have a zip file with lots of resources that you can download. It wouldn't let me upload it so I had to rename it to an illustrator file, but if you open it as an archive or rename it to a .zip file, it should work.

very nice, and helpful. for some reason their tiny bodies give me so much trouble when I try to put them in motion.

I think it turned out well too. After a year and a half, I notice my original vectors weren't as good as I could do now.

PeregrinStaraptor In reply to Nimaru [2013-02-06 00:36:13 +0000 UTC]

That's what a year and a half's worth of practice and dedication can do. When one puts in the time like you did, a great amount of improvement shows, and you'll only get better with time. Keep it up and best of luck with many more of your future vectors.

It sounds like they are, but I'm not sure.
And nice job making these! UuU

Nimaru In reply to FoxTone [2013-02-06 00:26:47 +0000 UTC]

Actually, kind of. I designed it so each leg is separate, the head, the snout, and the ears so you can replace the parts like they do in the show. Of course, that will matter more when I make more parts.

Here's one: [link] the photoset here is more realistic on what a gallop should be.

alphabetsoup314 In reply to ??? [2013-02-05 20:24:35 +0000 UTC]

Very nice reference, and anatomically correct, but these frames miss something: running (galloping) involves a point in time where all feet (hooves) are lifted off the ground. That is the difference between running and, say, speed walking. I am not sure what gait would result from these frames, but it would not be a gallop. See this set of photographs [link] of a galloping horse to see what I mean. Nevertheless, this is very helpful for understanding how the joints move, so I am putting it in my reference folder.

This was a complete cycle for the episode I checked. I will be doing other speeds though and I'm doing the walk now (25 frames!). I'll look to see if other episodes have a different frame in the run though, thanks

MLP 'equines' sometimes bend and move in ways that real equines don't, mostly for practical and/or artistic reasons. If the show is truly missing the point in the cycle where all feet leave the ground (I doubt this, it may just be very fast), then there may be a practical reason to it, similar to why there are so many other animation 'cheats' in the show.

Shikogo In reply to alphabetsoup314 [2013-02-05 21:18:24 +0000 UTC]

Pretty sure I even remember hearing that this point is missing before. I think the reason was simply that the cycle wouldn't look smooth enough.

Nimaru In reply to alphabetsoup314 [2013-02-05 21:00:32 +0000 UTC]

That's what I'm thinking. I remember watching a youtube video about it where the guy was talking about animation cheats in the show.

youre-no-wave In reply to alphabetsoup314 [2013-02-05 20:40:58 +0000 UTC]

I agree. This gait would most likely be something close to what western pleasure horses do. The part where all the feet leave the ground should go between the 3rd to last and 2nd to last ponies.

I don't have any animation software, but I used photoshop layers on top of each other and turned on and off visibility to check for rough spots. I'm glad it worked!
